You should know by know how much I like the little Baofeng UV-5RA radios. I think they absolutely rock! They are priced to allow each member of your family to have one of these little beauties. But, I’ve not seen any articles covering different pouches for carrying the handheld radio. < read more about the Baofeng UV-5RA >
Yes, the radio has a “clip” on the back that is sized for belts. And as a prepper, you could figure out different ways to use that clip to carry the radio on your personal vest, pack, etc. But I think pouches are way more protective, and in at least one case…less fatal.
As you also know, I like to save money whenever I can. There are all kinds of demands on our money these days, so saving a few buck here and there is important. So I go back to my old stand-by…military surplus.
I choose the military flashbang grenade pouch () in the desert 3-color design. Any color will work, but I wanted something compatible with the local desert color scheme. Now, don’t get the flashbang pouch I am talking about confused with the regular grenade pouch. Make sure you get the right one. See the pictures for exact details. They are currently selling for $5 – $7 a piece on eBay.
I like that the flap covers the top of the radio. When the rain is pouring down, that flap will go a long ways towards keeping the water off the radio. That is even true when using the larger 3800mAh battery.
FYI…The same pouch is perfect for a Garmin 60 & 64 series GPS unit, as well as a CAT (combat application tourniquet).
