When using a Tram 1185 magnetic mount vehicle antenna with your Baofeng UV-5R (A or MHP model) radio you need to covert the antenna cable to the radio’s antenna socket. To do that you must go from the Tram 1185 PL259 connector to an SMA female connector. There are multiple ways to do that.
First – you can use a cable to make the adaption/conversion. Previously I recommended a MPD Digital RF coaxial cable SMA female to UHF SO239 PL259 female RG58 (20 inches). But, I have come to not trust the company. I don’t have faith in them as a company. Their cables have held up just fine, but I don’t like the company any more.
So here is an option that I like better when using a cable…DHT Electronics Adapter for UHF Base and Mobile Antennas – SMA Female to UHF SO-239 Female Connectors 3FT. The quality appears to be just as good as the MPD Digital cable, maybe even better. And to top it off…it is a couple buck cheaper the MPD Digital cable.
Second – There is an option that I’ve tested thoroughly and found to work just fine. And…it is half the price of the MPD Digital cable. What I like about it is the fact that there is no cable at all to weaken, break, melt, get cut, etc. But, I do believe there is a potential downside to using the adapter. Using a Maxmoral UHF Female to SMA Female Plug RF Coaxial Adapter Connector cable allows the cable itself to cushion any of the stress before it hits the radio. Without the cable, there is a small chance, if you don’t pay attention, you could stress the radio antenna socket when using just the adapter itself (no cable). For me, I don’t think I will have that problem, that is why i use a speaker mic so I don’t have to be moving the radio around at all.
- I personally won’t use a MPD Digital product again.
- The DHT Electronics adapter cable will be my choice from now on when a cable adapter is required.
- My preferred method of adapting the Tram 1185 antenna to my Baofeng UV-5RMHP radios is the Maxmoral UHF Female to SMA Female Plug RF Coaxial Adapter Connector.
Warning – There is another adapter cable out there on the market that is made by DHT Electronics. It is called the Handheld Antenna Cable SMA male to UHF SO-239 Female Connector. It is a lightweight version of their high-quality and heavy-duty cable. I bought one to test it. I will not trust it in the field. I use it strictly for antenna SWR testing. It is very lightweight with little cable shielding to it. I have zero confidence that it could hold up in field operations.
