Practical Preparedness

Practical steps that build resilience, self-reliance, and everyday readiness.

Preparedness is more than knowledge…it requires action.

Practical Preparedness focuses on the skills, systems, and resources that help individuals, families, and communities become more capable, resilient, and self-reliant. From food production and water storage to energy, communications, and self-defense, these are the practical steps that turn preparedness from an idea into a way of life.

The Seven Common Risks & Threats

These are the seven most common failure points in real-world preparedness situations. Every practical preparedness skill, system, or resource ultimately addresses one or more of these problems. Start where your needs are most urgent—or work through them systematically to build complete resilience.

The 7 Common Risks & Threats are common to all emergencies, disasters, and even “grid-down” events. Every emergency, disaster, or prolonged disruption eventually involves one or more of these seven common problems.

Violence

Protecting yourself, your family, and your home begins with awareness, planning, and practical security measures (i.e. self-defense) before a crisis occurs.

Layering

Layering is the practice of building multiple overlapping systems of protection so that no single point of failure determines the event/incident outcome. In preparedness, layering means implementing multiple practical solutions so that if one fails, others continue to function and maintain stability.

Below is an 8-part series applying the layering concept/principle to preparedness…specifically as it applies to the 7 Common Risks/Threats.

Browse by Topic

Browse by Topic organizes all Practical Preparedness articles by subject area rather than by problem type. While the Seven Common Problems focus on what is failing in a situation, Browse by Topic lets you explore the full library by subject—such as water, communications, food storage, medical, and more.

This index will continue to grow and evolve as more articles are added over time.
