And America has spoken…

Dems will start off 2027 controlling Congress. Oh boy…

Two political questions come to mind: 1) What will the Dems do against Trump? 2) What will Trump try to do against the Dems?

But before that…Why did Dems take control of Congress?

That’s a pretty simple one…Prior to the election Trump’s approval numbers were terrible. Depending on the poll, for every one person who approved of his job performance, two to three disapproved. Those are pretty damning numbers. And considering the horrible condition of the economy and a long list of other issues…those numbers are justified.

Bottom line…

American voters rejected Trump. It is that simple.

Now, what will Dems do against Trump politically? Another simple one…they will impeach him. Of course before then there will be endless investigations and hearings. Who knows what will be turned up but it will be enough to impeach him.

Then, possibly the bigger question, what will Trump do against the Dems politically? Anything he can. Trump is a well-known egomaniac…that is clear. He will not take this monumental defeat lightly…but he will take it personally. I can see him vetoing every single piece of legislation that Dems get through Congress. And I don’t see the numbers where Dems can override his veto.

And, there are some Presidential powers that Trump may try to impose to diminish Dems’ political and legislative influence. That move…or moves…could prove very detrimental to the US electorate/citizens.

I am hearing the Dems top 4 agenda items are:

1. Cost of living – Address housing, groceries, energy, and childcare costs; reconsider tariff policies.

2. Healthcare and safety-net programs – Seek expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies and changes to Medicaid and food-assistance provisions.

3. Congressional oversight & checks/balances – Investigate alleged misconduct, financial conflicts, and executive-branch decisions through hearings and subpoenas. Increase scrutiny of executive actions, war powers, federal spending, and presidential appointments.

4. Taxes and federal spending – Pursue changes to provisions of the 2025 Republican tax-and-spending legislation, including provisions affecting high-income taxpayers and corporations.

There are two additional thoughts of mine regarding what Dems may add to their agenda…Democrats are discussing 1) federal AI regulation, including restrictions on data-center energy consumption, and 2) oversight of technology companies. This could prove interesting and an opening to broadly appeal to US citizenry.

Now, a word of caution…

This is directed at all US citizens regardless of political affiliation…be alert and careful. As I wrote multiple times earlier this year…the period between now and January 3, 2027, at noon (when the new congressional term begins) could be rocky at best in the United States. And potentially far, far worse. No one knows what the Republicans and Trump might try to do between now and then on any front.

After January 3rd the political climate will be even more divisive than it has been the last two years. The stability of the US government could become very questionable. And with confidence in government at historic lows…well, anything is possible. At best it will be contentious…at worst…well, it could get a lot worse.

Don’t overly worry about what will be going on day to day…most of it will be political theater and drama. But stay situationally aware if it starts crossing certain lines. I will try and do my best to keep my finger on the pulse of all of this.

Many view this mid-term election as a “win” for America and an anti-Trump mandate. Maybe it is, maybe not. Historically the sitting President takes a political hit in Congress in the mid-terms.

However, in my lifetime, I’ve never seen a more intense, emotionally charged rejection of a president, personally and politically.

I do not see the mid-term elections as a “political win” for anyone…I see this only as further dividing the country. But in my opinion, there was no other possible outcome.
