Do We Need Police Reform? (Q&A – 4)

  • Why do you care so much about police reform?

Wow, where do I even start!

Let’s go with this…police are supposed to protect and serve…according to their own words. And they aren’t doing that…facts and statistics prove that. Next, a civil society depends on police…or at least law & order…but not a police state. We have to live in a society of laws, albeit limited and directed towards protecting our rights, liberties, and freedoms…so we need police to help keep the peace and hold people accountable to those laws. What we don’t need is endless laws, policies, regulations, codes, etc. that are designed to control our lives.

We need a check and balance against those local politicians and legislators who wish to control every aspect of our lives…look around you will know what I mean. We need state and local police agencies to be a firewall, a backstop, a check/balance against our over-reaching federal government. There has to be someone, a force, to stop overreaching federal governments…and centralized (a.k.a. federal governments) always overreach…that is just the nature of unchecked power.

If we don’t reform police now, it will only continue to get worse…until there is no ability to reform them. And when that time to reform them runs out…we will be trapped in a totalitarian police state in which there is only one remedy. And Thomas Jefferson explained that remedy.

And I guess for me…Why tolerate inept and criminal performance/activity on the part of police who are otherwise well-paid to serve and protect? Why put up with thugs with badges

when there are many good police officers who do want to serve and protect? Why put up with badge bullies who don’t respect, honor, or support the Constitution and the Bill of Rights?

Why not honor our Founding Fathers, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and our God-given rights as they were/are intended…and hold public servants accountable?

So I guess I am saying why not reform police?

And don’t go where I think you might be headed…I am NOT saying defund police or disband them. I am saying restore commonsense to policing and let them focus on solving crimes and catching those criminals. And since they will be busy doing that, and that alone, they will by default leave 99% of everyone else alone.

Unfortunately I don’t think police reform can ever take place now. Why? Because the vast majority of US citizens no longer was to take responsibility for themselves…and that includes their own safety and security. So they sell their souls (i.e. rights, liberties, and freedoms) for the appearance of police provided safety and security. Sad.
