The time has come…

Well, well, well…the time has come. I figured someday it would, I just didn’t know when, or what the outcome would be. But it is here.

Let me explain, I have been watching the website’s stats closely for the last two weeks, loosely for a couple of months…and it is not impressive at all. Yes, the site has been growing over the years -overall- in totals of visitors and page views. However the growth rate between 2023 and 2024 is small and nothing like previous years. The last 20 or so articles that were not SitReps have only about a 17% rate of people opening the notification emails for those articles. And the actual article ‘view’ rate was even lower.

Yes, the SitRep articles still do well, but that is about it. Well, not entirely true. The ‘glamstead’ articles do substantially better than even the SitReps. The articles that do the worst are the current event articles and those that cover opinion subjects such as the transgender cult, abortion, politics, etc. People are just not opening those notifications and the actual article views are pretty low…real low actually. In addition, the number of ‘likes’ on all articles is really bad…and the ‘comments’ to most articles is even worse. That’s gotta tell me something.

What does all that mean and what does it tell me? Couple things:

  • Folks really don’t care about my opinion on most things, especially current events.
  • Folks do like the occasional SitRep which are more warnings based on my observations/research.
  • Folks really like the ‘glamstead’ stuff.
  • Folks also like to a lesser degree the ‘how to’ and some of the prepper info. (Kinda related to the ‘glamstead’ stuff.)

This all matches pretty dang close to the survey results from the “What next?” article. So I think my assessment is pretty accurate.

Oddly, SitReps take the most amount of time per word to prepare than any other type of article. That is due to the extensive research I have to do on each subject covered in the SitRep. The ‘glamstead’ articles are clearly my most favorite of all for me personally. It allows me to share what I’ve learned…both what to do and what not to do. In those articles I strive to keep people from making the same mistakes I’ve made and to help give folks ideas, or save them time.

I am not sure exactly how the direction of the website is going to change…but the time has come for a change. I believe I’ve become less relevant regarding currents events, social topics of the day, politics, etc. And I am fine with that…I am nearly 70 and I am sure that is a time I should start fading away in those areas. But that doesn’t mean I am going away or discontinuing the website…just changing the focus…and significantly reducing the amount of time I spend providing content. I don’t suffer from delusions of grandeur or think that my opinions can change the world. I am a very small voice in a very large world…and there are a whole lot of folks way smarter than me in this space.

I am also toying with the idea of ‘unsubscribing’ everyone. That would eliminate people from getting email notifications of new website posts. Then, if folks are truly interested in the website’s new direction they can subscribe again. It would be kinda like a forced weeding out people to clear their email accounts from my stuff and make the site more focused and relevant for those that are interested. I am open to thoughts, suggestions, and ideas on the one if you care to share.

Now, I have been working on a ‘dirt’ article for several weeks, probably will have it done next week. It will most likely be a multiple articles series to avoid a single book-length article. Yes, you read that right…dirt. And you can really look forward to that one, eh?

In the meantime…Pray, Plan, Prepare, Practice & be Peaceful.

Oh, and think about and consider giving service to others…there are a lot of folks that could use it…they need it…and they could use your help (big or small). Then again…couldn’t everyone use some kind of help in this day and age?

For those of you that would like share your suggestions/thoughts…especially the long-timers…please do so, I would love to hear from you!

  5. I’m not smart, nor wise, enough to make any recommendations on your new direction for your website. Heck, I haven’t even built my own website on which to publish article, I publish indirectly on others’ websites.

But, whatever you decide, hang tough. Keep writing.

Personally, I’ve come to realize that the value I get from writing is how I’m forced to think through things better and more deeply. Yes, I love to help others through my writings…and it does feel good to get the occasional “like.”

But the main value is how the writing forces me to crystallize my own thinking, values, reactions, priorities and plans. How it influences my own actions.

Six months ago, I was convinced we’d have massive violence around the 2024 elections. I sent out many a warning to friends, family and through various newsletters.

Six weeks ago, as I studied the evolving situation…I realized that I was wrong on my assessments!!!! Or, perhaps, maybe the facts of the situation had changed, and thus my assessment/prediction had to change, too. So, I tried to update my friends & family…to help calm them down (because many were indeed pretty worried).

I don’t know how successful I was in doing that…because I don’t know how many folks opened my emails or read my articles (when I published somewhere).

But it doesn’t matter anymore. I write to find the truth for myself…and if I can help somebody else along the way, all the better.

Maybe that’s where you’re heading too, friend.

Keep writing, and I’ll keep reading.

    Jim

  6. IMHO it is all just a sign of the times. I read several blogs and many people are feeling like they are waiting for the other shoe to drop. There is an emptyness right now, like even the Lord has backed off just a bit and is waiting for . . . something. I’ve still had warm fuzzy spiritual experiences since the election, but it is different in a way. Not as “rich” or as satisfying. The world just seems to be in a waiting mode. It is hard to get really interested in things right now, at least for me. But I’m sure it will all come back at some point. Don’t know just what it will take, but life moves on.

  7. Thank you my friend…..I have totally enjoyed & read most of your posts. I bought your book years ago & gave it to my retired firefighter/chief….we both love the way you think. His motto has always been…. plan, prevent, prepare, & get ready for the ride of your life. (I guess that’s why we love the way you think)! Your thoughts and knowledge has not gone unheard in this house…..thank you again.

  8. My interest in your blog is completely backwards from your stats. I came for the prepper stuff and stayed (and will continue to stay, don’t unsubscribe me) for the insite and research you do. I read, and watch, a lot of current event information, but yours is the only stuff I trust, period. I agree with you almost 100% of the time. I scan my email each morning, and if there is something from AH, that is what I read first.

I love your sit reps. Ofttimes I will print the page out and take it to someone that needs to know your (and my) side of things, and always encourage them to subscribe. I am doing my best to be “that gray man”, but sometimes I can’t help myself and have to make a comment (like now). As for giving you a “like” I don’t see a “like” button anywhere so I don’t push it. Most places that have a “like or dislike” button, I will push the “like” sometimes, but never the “dislike”, if I dislike them I stop reading them. The fact that I’m still here could be my pushing the “like” button.

You’ve published some of my comments, and I always print them out and give them to my Mother. Makes her proud of her son. I’m 76, she’s 98, and still living on her own. She does facebook, but doesn’t do email too well so she doesn’t sign up. Please don’t do facebook! it is too much of a time sink, and gives everyone a platform to share their opinions, most of which are WRONG and a great many of them are stupid. Keep doing what you’re doing and if you need to slow down, slow down, but don’t leave me. Jim Phillips and Rush Limbaugh both left me and I sure miss them. Jim was a prepper from way back, and you know who Rush is/was.

These are the words I try and live by…Pray, Plan, Prepare, Practice & be Peaceful. The “Be Peaceful” is going to be the hard one, one of these days, but I’m getting better thanks to you… rf

  9. Well, I have appreciated all your SitReps over the years. Your voice of warning and reason has been helpful.

For myself, I’m too busy working on our property to read much about what other people are doing. Especially the technical aspects of solar, etc. are out of my reach. But dirt!!! Now you are speaking our language, and I’ll definitely look for those articles. Thanks.

    • I figured ‘dirt’ would get some folks’ juices flowing 🙂
Keep working on your property!!! I know I love it. Been planting trees and grass most of the summer. Going to clean up the raised garden beds next week.
Almost seems like starting next year’s seedlings is just around the corner.

  10. I can only speak for myself but you remain one of few lights in a pretty bleak world! I appreciate all your articles and share them with nuclear and extended family. Your research on national financial situation and stance on law ENFORCEMENT vs peace officers has opened my eyes. Love the prep recommendations and wish I had more of an aptitude personally for electronics/solar.

Thank you, sincerely, for all your efforts to inform and warn

  11. I have and do appreciate all your hard work, knowledge, research and dedication to your readers.

Now, regarding dirt. I have a mulch pile I have had for years. It is about 13’x13′, at least 22 years in the making and it has never been disturbed. There has been leaves mostly, some dog poop, chicken poop, and misc. weeds, flower garden and flowerpot contents at the end of fall thrown into it. It is getting rather large and I would like to know suggestions on what to do with it. I had to stop vegetable gardening because the trees around my house are getting so tall I am not getting enough sun to sustain a vegetable garden. I do flowers though. Can’t do without those. Any suggestions? I am sure it is liquid gold just waiting to be mined.

  12. i havea hard time commenting because it always wants me to log in to word press, and I never can remember the password, so I have to keep changing it and it’s really frustrating. I have appreciated your musings on whatever topics, just keeping up with you. But I totally get that I’m at the age too that I am feeling the need to call, declutter, simplify… Whatever you do, I’ll be signing up!
