Check List – Exposure

This is the seventh post in a series of posts that will cover each area of threats/risks as they pertain to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down events. Each check list has been taken from the associated “layering” article for each area of risks and threats. This series is based on the “7 Common Risks/Threats” article I produced a few years ago.

As I have reviewed the disasters in the last 40+ years I noticed pattern develop, a pattern of common risks, or threats, that were present each and every time. Granted, in some situation/incidents one or more items were far more prominent but they were all there.

This particular check list applies to the risk/threat of exposure.

You need the ability to protect you and your family against exposure to the elements. This applies to your body and to your shelter.

Problem: Hypothermia and hyperthermia can kill…and do so rather quickly in some cases.

Solution: Acquire sufficient and proper clothing for each person in your family. Acquire basic shelter capability such as a tent.

Check List – Dehydration (water storage)

This is the seventh post in a series of posts that will cover each area of threats/risks as they pertain to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down events. Each check list has been taken from the associated “layering” article for each area of risks and threats. This series is based on the “7 Common Risks/Threats” article I produced a few years ago.

This particular check list applies to the risk/threat of dehydration…in other words…water storage.

This topic is virtually self-explanatory. You must have a source of clean water to survive. Water storage and ability Dehydration Killsto produce sanitized water is vital. Without it you go from being disoriented to sick to dead in a relatively short period of time.

Problem: You can last 3 – 5 days without water before you will die. Drinking contaminated water assures you and/or your family of an agonizing death.

Solution: Have an initial supply of transportable water storage. Have the ability to purify sufficient quantities of highly contaminated water into potable water (purified drinking/cooking water).

A short word about last night…

Well, there was certainly no Republican “tsunami” for sure. And the “red wave” appeared to have died out. A “red ripple” may not be appearing on the horizon either.

As of now it appears that the Senate will be under the control of the Democrat Party who actually have taken away a seat from the Republicans. And at this time the Republicans have not gotten a majority in the House either, but that could change as results continue in those undecided races. State Governors fared even worse having flipped two state houses to the Democrats.

And certainly, based on the projections by Republican leadership (including Trump), it was a devastating losing night for the Republican Party.

I went to bed last night in utter dismay at what was happening, what the voting results were saying about America. I woke up this morning with a feeling of both dread and sorrow. I laid there in bed for a few minutes and in my head I started to write my opinions of what took place in this mid-term election, but I had to stop myself. Because what would pore out of my head and heart onto the keyboard, and then would appear on your screen would not be appropriate and in no way actually and accurately reflect what I am thinking/feeling. So I will hold off for a bit before I write my commentary on what Americans just did.

To those of you who voted yesterday…thank you. You did both your civic duty to our country, and your spiritual duty to your God. No one could ask more of you…you did your duty, you met your responsibility, you did your best.

For now, let’s just keep our shoulder to the wheel, continue prepping, keep in mind our families, our communities, and our congregations…and how best to face the coming future. And keep a prayer in your heart that there may be some glimmer of hope in the outcome of the House election results.

Please Vote !

Yeah I know, this might be a touchy subject for some…I get it. In this day and age it is hard to believe that your vote might actually count -or be counted- in this political environment. And can your vote actually effect a change in anything is a question that many ask…rightfully so. And honestly, there have been times when I have not voted for any number of reasons including plain old laziness. But I think these times, this time, this election is somewhat different in many ways. I will vote.

And yes, I am asking you to vote also. Well, if you are eligible anyways.

So here is why…

Our Declaration of Independence is our founding document, our justification for revolution against tyranny, our proclamation that we would not stand for oppression, our statement of values to begin the formation of a new nation. In the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson wrote…

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed.”

The consent being our vote…without our consent the government was not supposed to have any power whatsoever. And yes, that has gotten out of control…or rather, the government has gotten out of control. Our consent is needed now more than ever to reign in the out of control government and the out of control elites that now run the government.

Samuel Adams also laid it out clearly…

“Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote…that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said it well as they encouraged members to vote…

Citizens of the United States have the privilege and duty of electing office holders and influencing public policy. Participation in the political process affects their communities and nation today and in the future. We urge Latter-day Saints to be active citizens by registering, exercising their right to vote, and engaging in civic affairs.

Over the years my view on voting has evolved from one of causal luxury to absolute necessity. I view that if I am to speak about the problems with our government and our elected representatives then I must do my duty, all of my Constitutional obligation, to be part of solutions. I see apathy and withdrawal as me being part of the problem and not contributing to the solutions.

Now, should my vote not be counted or otherwise corrupted…that is not my fault, someone else will bear that criminal burden and answer for it eventually. But I know, and my God knows, when I cast my vote I tried to do my part the best I could. And it is God whom I wish and strive to please. For God established this land for His purposes and I believe He wishes it to be so still…that dictates my desire, my obligation, my sacred duty to do my part, to cast my vote tomorrow.

Please consider the need for you to vote tomorrow.

Check List – Organization

This is the fifth post in a series of posts that will cover each area of threats/risks as they pertain to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down events.

This particular check list applies to the risk/threat of poor or no organization.

At first glance this may sound a bit silly, but trust me…it isn’t the least bit silly. If you and your family aren’t organized you will be wandering around trying to figure out who should do what. And if you wait until the emergency occurs to set into place the organization…you will more likely fail.

Also, I am not talking about organization in terms of lists, plans, maps, etc. I am talking about “who” does “what”. Who will be the leader, who will handle logistics, who will handle defense, who will do the cooking, etc. If you are fortunate enough to be part of a larger group such as your church’s congregation or any other group, this becomes even more important. Having a way to organize any group of any size is vital to successfully overcoming any emergency. Fortunately you don’t have to invent the solution…it is already there for you.

Problem: If your family or group is not organized to meet the needs of the group you are far more prone to problems of all kinds, especially violence, injury, and sickness.

Solution: Learn and adopt the Incident Command System.

Check List – Communications

This is the fourth post in a series of posts that will cover each area of threats/risks as they pertain to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down events.

This particular check list applies to the risk/threat of poor or no communications.

Here is that #1 item I was speaking about earlier. In every single emergency that had a serious injury or fatality…EVERY ONE!

There are two side of this situation, I call them hardware and software. The hardware are the gadgets; cell phones, radios, batteries, antennas, etc. The software are the skills, knowledge, process, plan, and implementation of communicating. Both are equally important.

Problem: Without the ability to communicate you cannot coordinate your emergency response with your family and/or other responders. This leaves you exposed to every single aspect of what can/could go wrong.

Solution: Acquire sufficient communications equipment and training to use it. Develop a plan on how and when to communicate.
