SitRep – 3/12/2019

Dang it!  I was really not wanting to do any SitReps any more…at least not many. But, this is one of those times I feel I should.

First off…I love life and many of the things going on in the world today. Next, I am not saying the sky is falling or we are about to crash and burn. Finally….please, PLEASE…don’t think this is a call for panic or any kind of serious, life-altering action(s) on your part. This is only me sharing some things I am seeing and that I am concerned about…and that I want you to consider and be concerned about.

Whew…that was my full disclaimer/disclosure!!!  OK, let’s get started…

Financial / Economy

It sucks!  No better way to put it. We are seeing pension funds going belly up with taxpayers having to bail them out, we see sub-prime auto loans defaulting at historic levels, we are seeing massive federal budget deficits, and the federal debt is more out of control now than ever before.

As for the federal debt…In 2018 interest on the national debt was about $310 billion dollars. In a mere five years (2023) the interest bill will have doubled to $619 billion!!  And that is if the national debt doesn’t grow like it has been and interest rates don’t grow more than expected.

I took a look at the USA’s GDP figures. I am not real crazy about using GDP due to some underlying issues I have with the details of how it is calculated. However, it does give a useful trend indicator. Stats: 2016 1.6%, 2017 2.2%, 2018 2.9%, 2019 2.3%, 2020 2.0%, 2021 1.8%. That means the economy is now softening and expected to get much more soft and soon.

Notice that when Trump took office the GDP improved. However, 2019 figures are showing that the GDP is weakening and the projections for the near future are not good…clear weakening sign for the economy. Also, as a side note…the IMF projects noticeably smaller GDP grow for the USA in years 2019 – 2021.

Last week the EU announced its central banks were going back into stimulus mode. Meaning they are in a near recession and are very worried about their economies slipping into a full-blown recession…one they think could be as bad as 2007 – 2008.

In January of this year the American consumer set a new record…the highest level of credit card debt ever in the history! It is well beyond a trillion dollars…with the average household owing nearly $7,000. That is staggering! I tend to compare that to the rise in GDP and see a correlation. Meaning a false growth in GDP due to it increasing based almost purely on debt increases. Also, as a side note there are 37million credit card accounts that are 90+ days past due. That status, 90+ days past due, is considered seriously delinquent.

In July 2018 the 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 3.41%. In March of 2019 the rate was 4.41%. That is a 30% increase in mortgage rates. However, in November 2018 the rate hit 4.94%…a 45% increase. That shows a drop of over 12% in that five months. So I see this as two issues…1) home buying is becoming more and more expensive for Americans leaving less available income for other expenses, 2) there is significant volatility in the credit market. Neither of these are good signs.

Now, let’s talk stocks for a minute. Well, the stock market sucks as well. For the last year it is up a measly 2.4%…terrible. And its volatility has been horrific. Enough said about the stock market.

And now on to retail…nearly 5000 retail stores will be closing in 2019. Oh wait…that is just the announced closings as of mid-March 2019. Let’s see how many more stores will close in addition to the 5000 as the year wears on.

And last tidbit…socialism. Yup, you’ve been hearing a lot about it lately…and for good reason. Socialism is the Democrat Party’s answer to overthrowing the US’s financial system. Have no doubt, without qualification, without reservation Democrats want socialism to rule the United States. Why? Because that gives them more control over the economy and thus, more power over people.

The Constitution

US Senate Bill 7 – “Extreme Risk Protection Order and Violence Prevention Act of 2019”

When all is said and done this is a gun confiscation bill completely outside of the Constitutional right to due process. On the mere derogatory comment of an unhappy neighbor, upset girlfriend, ticked off wife, idiot pastor, liberal doctor, or literally ANYONE…the police can simply come take your guns without any interaction with the court system.

And here is the thing you really need to know…it is being proposed by REPUBLICANS!!!!  Yes, you read that right. It is Sen. Marco Rubio…Progressive, globalist, Republican from Florida is the sponsor of this bill. And let’s now make it just a tad bit worse…Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican, announced that is already has the approval of President Trump, Republican. And that should come as no surprise since Trump is not a believer in the Second Amendment. Really? Yup, his administration has not defended the Second Amendment in the court system. And remember it is good ole Donny Boy that brought forward banning bump-stocks by Executive Order. And Trump is, and has been, a big anti-due process advocate.

Republicans, if not already, are now clearly showing their attitude against the Constitution. As I have been saying for a very long time…Democrats and Republicans are nothing more than different sides to the same coin.

Technology

I would have hoped that by now you are up to speed on all the issues with technology and privacy. If not, let me help you. There is no privacy when it involves technology. The NSA collects virtually all electronic messaging in the world, but specifically in the US. Multiple federal law enforcement agencies monitor all websites, especially social media…even so-called “private” or “membership” websites. As for cellphones…whatever the NSA doesn’t capture, it is all available to the feds with a simple “demand order” to the cell phone companies.

But, let’s talk Google for a second…not only are they a massive tech player, they are a massive personal information provider to the US government. And why? Money! Google not only provides all that data to the feds, they also now provide huge amounts of tech services to the US government…by hosting federal databases on Google servers. How’s that make you feel? Oh, and have you ever looked into how much money Google lobbyists pump into Washington?????  Yeah, they are the largest money pumper into that swamp.

Now for Facebook…they are a privacy mess. Well, technically there is ZERO privacy when it comes to Facebook. Everything they touch they collect personal information…and they either sell it to other corporations or provide it to the federal government. And here is a great little piece of info…Facebook VPNs. Yeah, Facebook got into the VPN (Virtual Private Network) business a while back. Well, finally someone ratted them out. Seems that Facebook monitors ALL information going over their VPNs. Yeah, cool eh? A supposedly “private” form of web communication is fully monitored by the very same company that is providing it. And they once again capture everything going through that network, record it, decipher it, and sell it. Or, as with all their other data tracking…provide it to the US government.

And let us not forget…VPNs are not as private as you might think, regardless of who is providing the service. The data (i.e. communications) is still monitored, can still be captured, and can still be decrypted. And all it takes is someone wanting that information. The feds simply need to provide a demand order to a company and “poof!’’ the US government gets whatever they want…for whatever reason they want.

As you already know…a lot of good is coming of out the use of technology…no doubt about it. But, plain and simple…technology is killing our society. It is dumbing people down to a moron level. And it is eliminating privacy. And it is killing people’s ability to actually interact with others on a social level…in real life face-to-face relationships. But, the single worst thing that we have learned…technology is manipulating people…big time! And I will let that go at that.

And already occurring, but what will increase exponentially in the next five years, is AI (Artificial Intelligence). What is happening in the AI world and what the plans for it are…should scare you into never getting a good night’s sleep again.

Politics

Another area that I could sum up by simply saying…it sucks!

I don’t care which party you belong to…you shouldn’t! The Democrats are the party of evil. Republicans…not much better…if any. I have issued this warning over and over again…the 2020 election is a no-win situation. The outcome of the investigation of Trump/Russia is also a no-win situation. Plainly put, the best of it is this…

  • Trump is spending us into oblivion.
  • Democrats are promoting infanticide and Socialism.
  • Republicans are promoting gun confiscation.
  • We have never, ever been more polarized.
  • All of these politicians are now acting with an insanity not seen in my lifetime.

Yeah, that dire. And I know the Trump lovers will go off the rails on me…but truth hurts and Trump is doing some miserable things to us.

But, what does it all mean? I can’t see anything positive coming out of Washington…period. And that is a very bad sign. Because when the chips are down, the country is split, is hurting financially…politicians seem to come up with war as an answer. The question to ask…Who is the war against next time?

Morality / Debauchery

I’ve already written extensively on this subject. We are crashing and burning as a country from a morality perspective. If you can’t see that…you aren’t looking. If nothing else, abortion/infanticide alone condemns this country.

US Government

Well, where do I start? I guess stating clearly that the US government is the biggest threat to the US Constitution and the worst danger to US citizens would be a very reliable summary. I’ve been writing quite a bit over the last few years exposing the utter darkness that is within the FBI. The CIA historical record stands on its own…one of the most evil governmental organizations that the modern world has ever known.

But, what about the Department of Justice? Well, all I can say is read Sidney Powell’s book “Licensed to Lie: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice”. It will make you sick to your stomach to know that those we think should be protecting us, US citizens, and our rights….well, they are actually doing just the opposite. Reading the massive corruption that exists in the DOJ is eye opening to say the least.

And an interesting side note…The FBI, the CIA, and the DOJ are not authorized under the US Constitution. Interesting, eh?

FYI…I firmly believe that in the coming couple/few years we are going to see a noticeable upswing in prosecution/persecution of individuals and groups that are vocal about what is happening in our country. We’ve already seen it occur in many situations over the last few decades. However, that will be nothing compared to what is happening. I also believe that the DOJ, as well as state authorities, will use “abuse” accusations/allegations as a major propaganda tool against individuals.

Summary

Nothing new! It is the same old crap that is been rapidly building for 20 years…it is just now exponentially worse than 20 years ago. And it is growing worse at a rate that is approaching light speed. And it is irreversible.

Now, granted…read the “tagline” to the website…If ye are prepared ye shall not fear. So don’t fear what is happening. And dang sure don’t fear what is coming! You simply have to prepare for it.

Now…what to do about it?

Sorry, a simple answer again…what you have already been doing…or should have been doing:

1 – Be prepared to defend yourself and your family.

2 – Be prepared to provide medical care for basic injuries and sickness.

3 – Be able to communicate with your family by unconventional means.

4 – Organize your preps, your family, and a group to respond to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down situations.

5 – Have multiple ways to purify water.

6 – Be able to provide secure shelter and have a back-up to your home as shelter.

7 – Be able to feed your family for as long as you possibly can. Make sure you have seeds stored.

8 – Get training in all aspects of the above 1 – 7.

9 – Practice the skills in all aspects of the above 1 – 7.

10 – Teach your family in all aspects of the above 1 – 7.

11 – Consider reaching out beyond your family in all aspects of the above 1 – 7.

12 – Strengthen your faith, your compassion, and your commitment to helping others.

13 – Help your family to strengthen their faith, their compassion, and their commitment to helping others.

14 – Listen to that still small voice within you…and act on it at once.

And in and amongst all of that…get yourself in the best financial situation you can.

Now, that list is not necessarily in priority order. Each person and family situation is different…and this list is just a “prompter” to give you something to think about. But, I do believe it to be sound advice. Listen to the still small voice on what you and your family should be doing…and DO IT! And do it sooner rather than later.

I posted a “update” to this article on 3/15/2019. Please <click here> to read that update.

Prepper Myth #6: BOB’s Need to Last 72 Hours

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Note: Myths 5 – 10 were taken from a post by a so-called prepper expert providing advice while dispelling “myths” about prepping and bugging out. I thought the advice to be so outrageously idiotic and dangerous that I felt the need to respond to this guy before he gets people killed.

Their Myth Reasoning (not me talking/writing)  Many times BOB’s are referred to as “72 hour kits”. The purpose of a BOB should be to get you from your home to your BOL and to last a minimum of three days, or 72 hours. As I have stated above, the events that would actually force me to bug out are pretty serious. If I have to leave, there is a good chance it won’t be safe for me to return to my home in 72 hours. My point is that you might have to make do for longer than 72 hours. Keep that in mind when stocking your BOB. You don’t know if you’ll find a working ATM while you’re out so you might consider keeping cash or precious metals in your BOB so you can restock while you’re bugged out.

My Opinion –  Wow! Once again this writer shows his naivete in matters of preparedness. But let me compliment him first. He does make a clear distinction between a “72-hour kit” and a “BOB” (a.k.a. Bug Out Bag, Get Out Of Dodge bag).

In you are dealing with a temporary disaster or emergency it might be appropriate to discuss returning to our home within 72 – 96 hours. In a grid-down or any serious disaster scenario the chances of ever being able to return to your home, or even your home surviving, is slim to none. So the two scenarios are vastly different in scope and nature.

His idea about carrying cash is good…but for what? That is the point…if you are going to carry cash, what is it for…exactly what for. He doesn’t explain the risks/threats you will face at all. You have to define the mission of each piece of gear/equipment.

Why?

Because I understand the concept of identifying the mission for a piece of gear. Obviously he has failed to identify what the mission of his BOB is. Define the mission of something BEFORE you stock it. Make each piece of gear count, be complete/thorough, and then test it. The thinking a backpack BOB (Bug Out Bag) can be stocked for some extended bugging out is ludicrous.

What are the primary threats/risks that you would be facing in any “bug-out” situation?

  • Violence and threat of injury or death
  • Injury from non-violent injuries
  • No/poor communications
  • No/poor organization
  • Dehydration
  • Hypothermia or hypothermia
  • Starvation

And how do I know this? Because I have studied and understand “L.I.P.S.” <read more> which tells you what your priorities are. Then I studied and understand how to rate threats/risk and how to mitigate them <read more>.

So once again, ill-conceived…at least incomplete…advice from an obviously inexperienced, untrained so-called “preparedness expert” giving advice that will kill you and your family.

Prepper Myth #5: You Have to Bug Out

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Note: Myths 5 – 10 were taken from a post by a so-called prepper expert providing advice while dispelling “myths” about prepping and bugging out. I thought the advice to be so outrageously idiotic and dangerous that I felt the need to respond to this guy before he gets people killed.

Buging Out Bugging In - myth, advice, expert Their Myth Reasoning (this is them talking/writing, not me) “This is probably the biggest of the myths; that there are many reasons that you’ll have to bug out. The truth is that for the vast majority of scenarios, you will be safer, more secure, and more comfortable by battening down and staying home. Home is where your family feels the safest. It is where you have a routine and familiar surroundings. In dire times, those two things go a long way to uphold our mental well-being. Home is also where all of your preparations are and where you’re best suited to face the most “come, what may” scenarios.”

My Opinion – I kinda agree, but there is some flawed logic they are using here. There are actually many reasons that you might have to “bug-out” depending on the scenario being discussed. The Make bug out decision based on reason and logic with a plan vs. making decisions based on emotions. emotion based decisions will get you kiled.primary determining factor is your home’s location relative to the scenario playing out. “Routine”, “feels the safest” or “familiar surroundings” don’t play into the decision to stay or leave. No, not at all. It is a matter of risk mitigation. You ask the question, “Does staying in my home vs. bugging-out increase or decrease the probability and severity of the threat that is being presented?” That’s it, it’s that simple. You don’t go off of feelings and emotions; that will get your family in a spot that could be very unhealthy.

If you don’t understand threats, risks and mitigation then you need to read <read more>. Threats boil down to two things, and only two things; the probability that an event will occur and if it does occur what is the severity of impact to your family. Once that is established then you weigh it against what you can do to reduce the probability and/or severity to a level that you feel you can adequately deal with the situation. Until then, you are making decisions by simple guesswork or worse yet, going off of emotions.

Now, I do agree that in many emergencies and disasters a “shelter-in-place” decision makes sense. But what you have to have ready is a Plan B, Plan C, etc. No matter what you have in place options and alternatives to move your family to another location for safety purposes. And trying to come up with those plans on the fly, under pressure, is not a good idea.

What I would suggest is a solid plan in advanced on what scenarios you are comfortable with sheltering in place, and what scenarios you feel warrants bugging-out. And most importantly – when and where.

Prepper Myth #4: TEOTWAWKI will be fun!

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Their Myth Reasoning (not me talking/writing) – A rarely-discussed but obvious undercurrent in survival circles is the general idea that somehow a serious survival situation will be great for those who have prepared adequately, and likely be good for the world in general. A number of justifications are given for this view: 1) It will have a cleansing effect, it will be a neat little “reset” button for society, 2) people’s priorities will improve by necessity, 3) etc. Although this issue is not discussed often, there is an obvious hoping-it-will-happen theme to the attitudes of many survivalists. Why? Because for those who have prepared, somehow things will be better than they were before SHTF. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The bottom line is that if you survive a worldwide collapse, you haven’t earned immortality – you’ve just earned the opportunity to die a later death. A death that will likely be violent but will almost be guaranteed to be painful and lingering. And it isn’t just your death that will be slow and painful – you’ll also have the experience of watching your friends and family go the same way. Culturally, we are now so many generations removed from primitive medical care that we’ve almost completely forgotten what life will be like without a professionally-staffed, well-equipped, electrified, sanitized, and heated hospital to go to when we have any sort of illness. You think appendicitis is bad with anesthesia, antibiotics, and a trained surgeon? It sure is – but now try it without any of those things. It doesn’t stop at medical care – in our culture, we have come to take for granted general security, food availability, reliable utilities, sanitation, the rule of law, human rights, access to information, and on and on. By definition, none of these things will be available in TEOTWAWKI. And if you think living in a world where none of these things exist is going to be anything other than misery, you haven’t thought very hard about what it will be like.

My Opinion – I agree. I have lived for extended periods of time in very primitive conditions and IT AIN’T FUN!!!! If you think trying to survive day-to-day from sickness, hordes, gangs, criminals, and just plain hard work, hunger and thirst, then you need a reality check. Think about how hard it could potentially be just to find enough water to drink for the day. Have you ever HAD to hunt for your meat? How about field dressing that elk or cow? How about butchering it into usable chunks of meat? Have you ever watched someone die because you can’t get them even minimal medical attention? Was it a family member?

Sure, in post-SHTF there would be moments of joy, happiness, and pleasure. But they would be minor & few compared to today but monumental in context. Yes, people in the military who are in combat grow closer together most of the time. But they also see their buddy’s arms, and legs blown off as well. That takes a huge spiritual and mental toll. Those folks in combat grow closer together to survive.

There is a reason why just 150 – 200 years ago the average life span was in the 30’s & 40’s. And then about 1000 years ago it was in the 20’s with ½ of children dying before puberty. Look around you at the people taking advanced medication or medical treatments; they will die and die rather quickly and in some cases not so pleasantly.

Post-SHTF won’t be a party, no picnics and dirty beyond belief. Prepare for SHTF but I would suggest you not romanticize it and hope for it.

How can you ease the pain? “Community!” Find and become part of a solid, conservative, Christian community. The only thing that will really ease the situation and have a hope for off-setting a true depressing SHTF scenario is a community of good people, with lots of various skills, working together. Then…you can have the hope to move from surviving to thriving.

Prepper Myth #3: I only need X number of days of food.

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Their Myth Reasoning (not me talking/writing) – I was motivated to write this article by a thread I saw on a message board where people were comparing the contents of their bugout bags. Seven people in a row described having less than two days’ worth of food. What is the point of having survival gear if you are so debilitated by hunger that you can’t use it? Some people who’ve never been without food for a couple of days will point out correctly that the human body can go for weeks without food, but I suggest that you fast (go without eating) for just four days and then try to engage in any kind of real physical activity – it’s a nonstarter. The body can keep itself alive without food, but that’s about all it can do. In a real survival situation, you won’t be sitting behind a desk typing e-mails; you’ll be running, walking, digging, and fighting, plus any other actions that a machine used to do for you. All that requires energy – lots of it. You’re going to have to supply that energy – all of it. Now multiply that obligation by the number of people in your group, and the number of days you’ll have to go without a resupply of food. The result is a mountain of food, much more than what casual preppers sock away. The problem isn’t just food – what are you going to drink? How are you going to sanitize that water supply? How are you going to cook all that food? However much food you store, you’ll need an equivalent source of energy to cook it, since most long-term survival foods, like grains and legumes, all need to be cooked. The myth I’m describing is perhaps more a tendency than a myth – preppers focus on weapons and defensive equipment (some out of fear and some because those are the things they like using anyway), when they should be focusing on food. You can buy an awful lot of wheat for the price of a single gun.

My Opinion –  I agree with this…to a point. But, you will never know exactly how much food and water you will need. There is no magic number of days/months/years worth of food storage. Your food storage may be just for your family of four but you may end up with 5 other families as well. So I keep adding to my pile every month; a little here and a little there.

And now here is the first real point…ability to produce food (i.e. garden). To hedge my food storage bet I have started only buying heirloom plants for the garden and then store the seeds. And just to make sure I would get off to the right start I bought three good starter kits of seeds for a garden. Here is the most important aspect about having PLENTY of food storage – you can always use it and it will never go to waste. You or someone else in your family or community will enjoy it; even if it is in retirement reducing your food bill.

And here is my second real point…their comment about “weapons and defensive equipment” is WAY off!! Their statement “some out of fear and some because those are the things they like using anyway” shows their true feelings against guns and tactical gear. This is a typical view of many people. Why? because they don’t really understand the actual risks/threats that will exist during emergencies, disasters, and grid-down. They don’t understand risk mitigation and they have this powder-puff view of the world once the SHTF. If you are not properly armed and trained, the first guy that is will end up with all that great food and water storage of yours.

Prepper Myth #2: Stock up on the ammo you’ll need to defend yourself with.

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Their Myth Reasoning (not me talking/writing) – Once again, the math just doesn’t add up on storing a lot of ammo. There is only one scenario where you think you’ll be using a lot of ammunition, and it is the horde scenario. But, there again, you won’t need a lot of ammo – the horde scenario will be over in a few minutes to a few hours, with you the loser, and your stored ammo with go to the winners. Don’t get me wrong – you need guns and ammo, but the idea that you’re going to expend thousands of rounds is just a reflection of people’s erroneous beliefs about what kind of shooting situations they’ll be in. If you’re determined to buy ammo, don’t buy them for just your guns, – buy them for everybody else’s. You’ll actually own a valuable commodity. Better yet, use the money to buy food, which leads us to myth #3.

My Opinion – I disagree with this one. There are a number of scenarios that would require LOTS of ammo. Most firefights don’t last long in non-conventional warfare. But during that brief encounter you could easily blow through 200 – 300 rounds per person. To think a couple hundred rounds is sufficient for grid-down is not such a good idea. Plenty of rifle or carbine ammo (1000 – 2000 rounds per weapon minimum), a good supply of pistol ammo (500 – 1000 rounds) and a respectable supply of shotgun ammunition (250+ rounds of 00 Buck & 100+ rounds of slugs minimum) is extremely important. This is a good starting point. But I also worry about everyday ammo shortages, price increases, eventual ban or limitations, etc. To me ammo, and plenty of it, is just a good investment that makes me feel more secure. And no, I only will store the ammo I need for my weapons. Just so happens that my weapons are VERY common in caliber. You think there is a good reason for that? Any oddball caliber weapons are a recipe for disaster. Get rid of them now while there is still a market for them. If you win the firefight…to the victor go the spoils; which means you get their guns and their ammo. You don’t need to buy and store ammo for everybody else’s guns…worry about your own ammo needs. And lots of ammo equals lots of security.

Prepper Myth #1: You can defend yourself against the horde.

This is one of a series of posts on some commonly held prepping beliefs, and reasons why they may be wrong and possibly dangerous to you and your loved ones.

Their Myth Reasoning (not me talking/writing) – Most of the beginning and intermediate level preppers I’ve met believe that they will be defending their property against a horde of starving or otherwise malicious people, and they prep accordingly. It’s important to note that no one who has actually tried to defend themselves against a large group of determined assailants actually thinks it can be done. The math is pretty simple: the horde has numbers on its side, time on its side, and its determination probably matches, in not exceeds, yours. If a large group of people decide that you’ve have something they want, that’s all there is to it. You can take a stand, but sooner or later, you’re going to run out of manpower, firepower, or sleep (or all three), and it’s all over. These aren’t slow-moving, unarmed, clumsy movie zombies who want to eat your brains – these are determined, smart people who are just trying to preserve their own lives, who can scale fences, create strategies, or simply overwhelm you with sheer numbers. This is why experienced preppers either live in a very remote location and/or conceal that they are preppers.

My Opinion – This could absolutely NOT be a myth if you define “yourself” as a larger, more organized, better armed horde than the one attacking you. Even a decent sized group (6 – 15) would have problems against 30 people of any horde. You can balance the odds a bit by communications (clear & secure), planning (clear mission/goals & planning well in advance), tactics (i.e. rings of defense, Immediate Action Drills), marksmanship, dependable weapons, defensible position, etc. But to think a family (say 4 – 6 members) can defend against a mob/horde, NO WAY! At least not for long. So your horde has to be better prepared, better organized and more determined than the other guy’s horde. It also makes sense to have a Plan B. I would suggest a Plan A finding yourself in a great community where preparedness and patriotism is a way of life.

FAQ – 2/28/2019 (#2)

  • What about the Democrats “new green deal”…is there anything to it?

Well, my take on it is at the 60,000’ level. First off, the details of the proposal are insanity…at best. Seriously, they are totally unrealistic. But here is the important part…it is pure Communism. Yes, this is something right out of the old Soviet Union. A program like this would only ever be proposed by a Communist regime. And here is the main point…Democrats have signed on to it in droves, especially Democrat Presidential candidates.

Now, true that there are Dems that have referred to it as not being practical. But, many of those same people call it “aspirational” or a worthy goal. And there is a subtlety of it all. Those people still embrace the whole idea of the Communist plan, they just know they can’t get it implemented…yet. So they believe in the Communist concepts of the proposal!!!

What does all of that mean? The Democrat Party, and its members, are showing that they have become the party of Communist ideas and ideals. And that should shock you!

  • What is the “cool kid club” in prepper circles?

Ah, had to chuckle at that one. But honestly, it really isn’t anything funny; it is all too plain…and damaging. What? Why?

Well, on the less problematic side of it…go back to your high school years. Weren’t there different groups of kids? Some call them clicks. When I went to school there were the jocks, stoners, rednecks, hoodlums, etc. They tended to hang out with each other and usually didn’t do much crossover socializing. And from time to time there was tension or outright aggression, occasionally violence. Strangely enough the violence almost always originated from the jocks in our school.

In addition to those groups, there were also the “cool kids.” They were usually the pretty people, the athletic people, the cheerleaders, etc. The did the cool things, wore the cool clothes, center of attention at dances, prom King & Queen, etc. A lot of kids wanted to be part of the “cool kids” but those that were “cool kids” usually didn’t accept new members…unless they were cool enough. Yeah for the most part they suffered, egotism, self-centeredness, delusions of grandeur, etc. But, they were still cool…at least in their own eyes.

So, how does that apply to preppers? There is the equivalent in the prepper community of the “cool kids.” Have you seen preppers that have a cult-like following? The hardcore tactical guy? The guy who people have questions of, send emails to, etc., but they seldom, if ever, respond? How about the guy who tries to sound like the final authority on subjects and others praise him for all his wisdom? Look around at the next prepper gathering you attend…who seems to be the center of attention?

So now you have an idea of my opinion of prepper “cool kid club” and it is not a good opinion. Why? Because they tend to hold themselves above others…and a lot of others encourage that.

Why is that a bad thing? Well, in and of itself, it is not. The problem comes in when it actually starts creating different “class” distinctions of preppers. For those of us that are LDS we read in the Book of Mormon over and over again how society suffers greatly when people create class distinctions and elevate some people over others. In the New Testament shows how the Sadducees and Pharisees behaved…they were very pompous and felt they were better than others…and acted that way towards others.

I think the perfect example of how we should treat each other is the example Christ set. He mingled with, ate with, talked with, walked with anyone and everyone. He was a true man of the people. He didn’t elevate himself over anyone. Heck, he even washed folks’ feet for them!

Bottom line…don’t become a member of the prepper “cool kid club”…it isn’t worth it. And, don’t worry about the prepper “cool kid club”…they mostly just seek for the veneration of others…and ego feeding frenzy. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated…leave the ego behind.

Disclaimer: Yes, I got carried away from time to time with who I thought I was. I haven’t always treated people as well as I should have. But, I never, ever thought I was a member of the prepper “cool kid club.” So, if I have ever come off that way, given you that impression that I was a member of the prepper “cool kid club”…I sincerely apologize.

  • Why do you say “don’t believe me”, “don’t trust what I say”?

Well, simple…I want you to do what is right for you. I do a lot of research, I practice what I prepper preach. I believe in what I tell you. But, I don’t want you to believe me. I want you to prove me right or prove me wrong. Why? Because I feel prepping is that important.

And now…I also want you to treat other prepper “experts” the same way. Don’t believe what experts say…challenge what they say. Figure out if what we are saying is true or not. Do not trust the fate of you and your family in others.

There are many folks out there that give some terrible, sometimes horrible, prepper advice. And honestly, it doesn’t matter if they/we are well-intentioned or not. What matters is how it affects/impacts you and your family.

Sorry, I get a little passionate when I talk about this subject. Why? Because I read so many things that I feel is so wrong for prepping. Yes, that is an “opinion” on my part. Look, I’ve been on thousands of incidents, hundreds of large-scale emergencies and disasters, and I see what works and what doesn’t. I see some folks give advice that I know is wrong, other times something just feels wrong. And I have a hard time being quiet about it. Why? Because I don’t want your family to be hurt by bad advice…whomever it comes from. Only you know what is right for you and your family. So you have to take the responsibility to know what to do…or not.

Bottom line…I want you to figure out what is right. So I tell you to knot believe me in the hopes that you will figure out what “right” is for you and your family.

  • Can you recommend good quality 20-year prepared meal food storage?

Here is the central page for all things “food”…avoiding starvation <read more>

Here is the page specifically for long-term food storage <read more>

For specific brands I like Mountain House and Thrive. If you can find a Thrive dealer in your area you can get some pretty good deals…especially if you are willing to host a “party” or coordinate a large group order.

TRAP – The #1 obstacle to people getting prepared for emergencies and disasters is Normalcy Bias.

Normalcy Bias - Man with head in the sandI have never seen any reliable formal studies on what percentage of the US population is prepared for disasters and emergencies. Based on my 40+ years of experience I would say less than 3% for the most minor of emergencies and disasters that would last 10 days. For a longer-term disaster (i.e. hurricane Katrina) I would say that % drops to no more than 1% – 2%. For true “grid-down” I honestly believe that % is somewhere around .1%  (less than 1%) in the absolute best case scenario.

There are a number of reasons for the lack of longer-term and “grid-down” preparedness. Of which I think the top ones would be finances, knowledge and motivation. But for the average person being prepared for the most minor of emergencies and disasters would be Normalcy Bias. I written about Normalcy Bias before (TRAP – Normalcy Bias can kill you quicker than Competency Bias.).

And here is the thing…97+% of people don’t want to hear about emergency & disaster preparedness at all. Why? It is scary and way outside of what anyone really things will happen. Let me tell you I’ve seen folks who live in the forest with trees, brush and grass all around them. Then they can’t believe it when a wildfire is threatening. So how are those same types of people gonna process that the grid could come down? Come on, they couldn’t even fathom the damage a hurricane could produce living in New Orleans BELOW sea level!!

Normalcy Bias is the single biggest hurdle for almost everyone to overcome in preparing for emergencies and disasters.Normalcy bias - question mark holding man down

So, what is your Normalcy Bias preventing you from doing?

TRAP : REI wool socks…

I hate issuing warnings, but sometimes they are needed. This is one of those times.

A bunch of years ago I purchased REI brand wool socks and really liked them. And like all socks, they finally wore out. Time to replace them!

So about two months ago I purchased a couple different pair of REI Co-op brand socks. And here is the sad part…I didn’t really spend enough time looking at the “tech specs” of the socks I purchased. Yeah…me!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed one night as I was taking socks off that the space underneath my toes, just forward of the ball of my foot was damp. That is not supposed to happen with wool socks! So, I tried another pair of REI Co-op the next morning, and the same thing that night. Time to test!

So, I take all four pairs of the REI Co-op brand wool socks and wash/dry them. I wear each pair (1 pair all day, I day each) for four consecutive days. All had the same results. Bad!

Wool socks that make your feet damp is a bad thing…a very bad thing! In cold weather that good spell disaster.

I then tried a couple pair of my Smartwool socks and my feet were just fine.

That means I now have to say don’t buy REI Co-op brand socks. They are not good for your feet.

Why were they creating the dampness? The REI Co-op brand of socks actually have a high percentage of “non-wool” materials (i.e. nylon, spandex, Lycra, etc.). I think anything less than 90 – 95% wool is not the way to go.
