Avoided Crypto Loss !

AH Trimble Feedback and Comments

  • Thank you! Thank You ! THANK YOU!!!

We had money in Bitcoin and we had basically broken even when we found your site and read the info on crypto you wrote. We got out right then. Had we not sold we would have lost a lot of money we did not have to lose.

How did you know what was coming?

I did my research, applied common sense, and stuck to the basic rules (i.e. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.). Plus, the economy just can’t support junk crap like that. Heck, the economy can’t really, and won’t be able to, handle much of anything…probably nothing.

I am really happy to hear that you didn’t lose money. I just saw today that the crypto market has recently lost well over a trillion dollars. Yup, I told everyone it would happen!! Glad some folks such as yourself listened and took steps to avoid trouble.

Sad part…we are just seeing the surface of the bubbles that are, and will, burst. It is looking real bad. I am seeing some disjointed information points showing up on economic matters. I am trying to sort it out…but it looks bad at this point, maybe even really bad.

Hey Folks…I am taking the week off

Here’s the deal…I am taking the week off. We have family in town all week for Thanksgiving…and besides that I am a little burned out. All the political crap from the election, all the screwy stuff regarding the economy, it has just taken a bit of a toll on me. And add to that 2 recent unexpected deaths of close friends…well, I just a little time off with the teenage nieces and nephews…and lot’s of good food.

I hope you understand.

Now, that being said, I already have some great articles in the works and I will be back at it on the 28th. See you then!

TIP : Solar – Check/Tighten All Connections…regularly

A dangerous, potentially catastrophic, situation developed with my solar system and I was almost unaware of it. Thankfully I caught it in time and learned a couple lessons along the way. And that is what I will share with you today.

I run a 150/70 Victron MPPT SmartCharger…a charge controller that converts the solar panel power into usable power that charges my batteries and provides power to the inverter during daylight hours. The 150 represents the incoming voltage from the solar panels, the 70 represents the amperage (current) going into the inverter and batteries.

Normally we push about 82vDC from the panels into the charge controller. And the charge controller runs about 45 – 50amps into the batteries/inverter under normal conditions. It can run a high as 70amps in early fall or on some summer days. In the winter it can go as low as 35 – 40amps due to the solar elevation. Obviously it can go down noticeably as cloud cover increases.

When I installed the charge controller I used a standard wire size calculator for 70a, less than 10’ (round trip) circuit. That showed that 6AWG wire was plenty good enough, well within the requirements. And I wanted the circuit fused to protect the charge controller and the rest of the system, so I went with an 80a ANL fuse. And since I didn’t want the wire to act as a fuse I upgraded the wire to 4AWG, which is capable of 80a when used in a less than 15’ (round trip) circuit. Yup, all set!

About 2 months ago I was looking over the system on a particularly sunny early fall afternoon with the sun at the perfect solar elevation for my panels. I was hitting the 70a max for the charge controller. But not to worry, the charge controller will throttle the output amperage at 70a and not let it go above that limit. It does that by limiting the input power from the panels. Well, something prompted me to touch the 4AWG wire between the charge controller and the ANL fuse. Ah…hot!

For some reason, and I mean unknown, I had used 2AWG between the main busbar and the ANL fuse, but used 4AWG between the fuse and the charge controller. Please don’t ask me why, I don’t remember. I probably ran out of 2AWG and didn’t want to go buy a 1’ piece of 2AWG…but I wasn’t worried about it because 4AWG was a full size above what was required anyways.

But the 2AWG wire on the battery side of the fuse was not hot at all. Hummm….. I wrote it off as being the peak 70a current due to the sun intensity, panel angle, and solar elevation. A month later I was looking over the system again and noticed a slight discoloration to the 4AWG wire, I touched it, it was real warm, not hot, but real warm. The 2AWG below the fuse was room temperature. Problem! But I couldn’t figure it out, not to worry, the fuse would protect the system no matter what…and it was high quality 105c degree rated insulation on the wire so I wasn’t particularly.

A couple of weeks later I was once again looking over the system and noticed my red electrical tape on the aforementioned 4AWG wire, used as makeshift heat shrink, had flagged on me and an end was sticking out. 40A current showing on the charge controller and the wire was real warm. OK, I am not the brightest bulb on the tree but I realized I had to cure this problem. I wasn’t sure what the problem was…but it had to be fixed whatever it was. And since I didn’t know for sure what the problem actually was, it was my intention to replace the 4AWG wire with 2AWG, new terminal lug, proper heat shrink, and replace the 80a ANL fuse, maybe even the fuse holder if needed.

Now…left turn for a minute. While researching my upcoming system upgrade I learned that using wire ferrules on the battery wire going into the charge controller is considered “best practice” for a number of reasons, all of which made perfect sense. So I was sure that my wire overheating came from that lack of wire ferrule when I first put the system together 2.5 years ago. I now have the tool and wire ferrules…this “fix” would be a great trial run for me.

Well, the day came for the “great fix”…full batteries, informed the wife of the need for low power consumption, and gathered all of my tools and parts. Shut down the panel power input, disconnected the batteries from the charge controller, tested all the wires to make sure the charge controller was isolated, and double checked everything once again.

I went to disconnect the charge controller to battery ring terminal from the fuse and immediately knew what the problem was.

About a year ago I was reading on how to maintain a solar system and one of the points made was to check all electrical connections, then tighten or replace as needed. Ah, well, the nut holding down the ring terminal on the charge controller side of the fuse was actually loose. Yup, loose…and that was the problem.

You see if a terminal connection is loose it becomes a high resistance connection and that generates heat. The hotter the terminal gets, the weaker it becomes, and this continues until it shows up as a critical failure. But the question remains…why did it become loose? I know for a fact that when I did the initial install I tightened it correctly…period. But, as I thought about it…all the times the ring terminal connection heated up, then cooled down, then heated up, then cooled down…over and over again nearly 2,600 times. The nut simply loosened itself due to the continuous heating and cooling. And I never once checked my connections to see if everything was still tight.

Well, I replaced everything as needed, making sure everything was properly tightened. Everything is fine now, the system is running as designed, wire is room temperature, and I am sleeping a little better. Then I took the old fuse apart this morning. Oooooppppppsssssss…

See the picture for more information, but, the fuse was burnt as it should be but not 100% separated at the element. Thus, current/power was still flowing to the batteries/inverter but was several impeded.

Needless to say…I will be setting up a schedule to perform maintenance just as advised.

Well, well, well…the GOP has spoken…and they suck!

The Senate GOP members just put McConnell in as their leader. Seems appropriate…the leader of the losing party…the leader of the party who blew a sure GOP victory into an embarrassing and humiliating defeat. A defeat where the GOP actually lost ground in the Senate. McConnell is the right figurehead for that debacle to be sure!

He is the main/primary reason the GOP didn’t gain control of the Senate…he pulled 10’s of millions of dollars out of two key Senate races that the GOP should have won, Arizona and New Hampshire. And he did so with just two weeks to go, knowing full well it would cost both GOP candidates the chance of being elected, and both unseating a Democrat, and assuring a GOP Senate majority.

So a person should naturally ask…Why would he do such a thing intentionally? Why would he purposely lose two key Senate races and thus knowingly lose control of the Senate? Huuummmmm…..

So the GOP appears to have taken control of the House of Representatives and they have, in their infinite wisdom, selected Kevin McCarthy as their leader. Oh Yea!

Now, who is Kevin McCarthy…he has been in politics all his adult working life…he is a career politician…McCarthy has never held a real job. He wasn’t pro-life until 2015, before then he was very pro-abortion. In 2018 an investigation showed how McCarthy’s brother-in-law’s company, Vortex Construction, had received $7.6 million since 2000 in no-bid and other prime federal contracts in California.

Now let’s talk about McCarthy’s net worth…$95,000,000!! Yeah, after a life-long career as politician, and no inheritances that I can find, at the age of 57, he is worth $95million. Tell me how you think that is possible?

Oh, maybe from his salary as a member of the House of Representatives…making $310,000 per year. See…if he saved every single dollar and penny from his House salary he would have saved up…oh, only 1/10th of his net worth.

Oh, but wait… McCarthy and his family live in an 8,800square-foot luxury mansion located in California that’s worth $21million. Oh, but wait…he drives a Jaguar XF, ($120,000), a Lexus ES ($136,000), a Lincoln Continental, an Aston Martin DBX, a BMW X6, and a Toyota Vellfire. Yeah, the Velfire, at the low-end of his personal vehicle fleet, costs…well, the base model starts at $107,000. So folks…you do the math.

GOP leadership sucks…and you know it!

In the last…well, you pick the number of years…what has the GOP party done for the country to restore freedoms, liberties, rights? What practical steps have they taken to reign in control of the increasingly authoritarian federal government? Oh, wait…it was Republicans, Bush #2 and a Republican Congress, that gave the USA a huge boost towards losing massive rights, freedoms, and liberties in 2001! It was the Republicans that hammered in the final nail giving us an authoritarian US federal government that is crushing us 20 years later.

America is doomed with the Dems and Repubs running the show!

Cryptocurrency…Idiots…FTX…Evil…

I warned you and warned you and warned you about cryptocurrency!

I hope you listened…I have been warning you in really plain terms for four years that cryptocurrency is a complete hoax and something to stay far, far away from. Again, I hoped you listened.

Let’s start off with the easiest and most obvious…return on investment. When I started posting my articles about the sheer stupidity of cryptocurrency (2/2021) Bitcoin was hovering around $58,000…it’s now $16,450. Yeah, that means a 72% loss in less than 2 years. In June when I warned folks that they be prepared to lose all of their money, Bitcoin was $21,230…it’s now $16,450. Yeah, that means a 23% loss in just at 5 months. Let’s recap this for you…if you bought Bitcoin in February of 2021, as of today, Bitcoin would have to go up more than 350% for you to just break even.

How does that sound as a great investment!?!?

And please, don’t give me that crap about it being a currency…IT ISN’T! It is a barter/trade item like any commodity…an item/commodity with ZERO intrinsic value.

And please don’t give me that crap about it being super private and hidden from tracking, especially hidden from tracking by the government…IT ISN’T! The IRS has already admitted publicly that it tracks ALL cryptocurrency transactions and they know both the buyers and the sellers of each transaction. And if it supposedly can’t be tracked…then how are 100’s of millions of it stolen every year? Hummmmm????

And that now brings me to the “theft” aspect of this post…to the tune of billions of $’s of cryptocurrency…but it is even worse than that.

Let’s talk about “FTX” shall we…

FTX is a cryptocurrency exchange, third largest in the world. Meaning you can store your cryptocurrency there, trade among different cryptocurrencies, outright buy/sell your cryptocurrency, etc. Well, on 11/12 the new CEO of FTX said that effective immediately the company was turning off the ability of customers to trade or withdraw funds from their accounts. Why?

That is where it gets interesting…but wait for the rest of the story…for now understand this…on Friday 11/12 then current CEO and founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, resigned. Why did he resign? Maybe it had to do with FTX filing bankruptcy earlier that day. Why did FTX file bankruptcy? Maybe it had to do with billions of $’s (yes, BILLIONS) missing from FTX accounts.

But wait…early analysis shows that approximately $633million went missing (i.e. stolen) from FTX accounts as FTX was filing for bankruptcy on Friday. But wait…total stolen/missing funds from FTX are estimated to be as much as $10 – $50 BILLION dollars!!

And amazingly enough…none of the pre-bankruptcy leadership can’t be found anywhere. Imagine that!

Could it get any worse? Of course it could…and does!

Sam Bankman-Fried, the FTX CEO who resigned last Friday, and who is currently missing, donated about $40,000,000 (40 million $’s) to the Democrats for the 2022 mid-term elections. Total combined donations could hit $100million from those associated with Bankman-Fried. And there are substantial reports that he personally had pledged $1BILLION to the Democrats for the 2024 presidential elections. And of course Bankman-Fried was one of the top 3 donors to the Democrats for the 2020 presidential election.

Let’s add one more wrinkle to this evil…

Sam Bankman-Fried was a personal friend of both the Clintons and the Bidens. And Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden were both big supporters of, and directly involved in, overthrowing the Ukrainian government some 8 years ago. And yup, you guessed it, there is also a link between FTX and the current Ukraine government (the same government that Clinton/Biden put into power) since their war with Russia broke out. It appears that US aid dollars that were sent to Ukraine got placed with FTX…then FTX donated heavily to the Democrats for the 2022 mid-term elections,, and the Ukraine account at FTX is one of many accounts that is missing funds. And many of those donated dollars ended up directly back into the pockets of…wait for it…Bidens & Clintons among other Democrats.

And folks…this is just scratching the surface of what was and is going on with cryptocurrency.

I hope you listened. Cryptocurrency isn’t just a scam, it is outright fraud, it is outright political evil…and it is dangerous…more so than many have any concept of.

Mid-Term Elections : My Opinion

I am so glad I waited till now to write about the recent mid-term elections, to have written sooner would have been a huge mistake and a misrepresentation of my real opinion (written on 11/14, edited on 11/15, posted on 11/16 ).

As my view/opinion has clarified and I have become more firm in that vision, I hopefully can share a few words that might help me get over the election…and possibly entertain you as well. Yes, it would be presumptuous of me to think I could educate you in what happened…the best I can do is share another view. Call me a pundit if you will…I will only be mildly offended.

So how in the world do I even begin to perform my digital magic and work through what happened on November 8th, a mere one week ago…the 7th day anniversary of a gargantuan embarrassment for the GOP…embarrassment on a missive and historic scale? Well, I will start with predicting the future…based on what I am seeing now, the GOP will lose the 2024 Presidential election and we will have yet another liberal, Progressive, elitist, authoritarian leader of the so-called free world…and the USA. How pathetic!

So that is my word of the day to describe the GOP performance a week ago…pathetic.

Now hold on a second…election fraud. If there was election fraud then you can stop reading this post right here because everything that follows will all be bogus information and worthless opinion. However, I am not seeing a single shred of independent and verifiable election fraud evidence in the mid-term election. Yes, there is some incompetence and maybe a little bit of weirdness…but no actual evidence of fraud that would affect any of the races the GOP lost. So if you think the election was all rigged and fraudulent…then don’t waste your time by reading this post.

Moving on…

After each fire or any other incident I was on in the last 12 years of my emergency management career we would hold what is called an “After Action Review” or “AAR” for short. During that meeting we would discuss 4 primary issues: 1) what was our goal, 2) what actually happened, 3) what went right, and, 4) what went wrong. The goal of the AAR was to identify how to be better at our job the next time. It was/is a pretty effective process when properly applied and addressed candidly.

What was the goal of the GOP for the mid-term elections? If you take them at their word it was to win the majority of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House GOP leadership also went so far as to state they would hold hearings on the Biden family, both Joe and Hunter. They also talked about putting the breaks on Uncle Joe’s spending. But that is only at the national level, here locally the GOP governor hopeful talked about fixing the corrupt election process while she beat up the press and denigrated the Democrats. The rest of the state level offices…well, I am not sure what they wanted to accomplish…I never really heard from them about what they actually proposed to do.

Now, if you listened to the national GOP leadership they made it clear that…oh, wait a minute…who is the national level GOP leadership? Seriously, tell me…I couldn’t figure it out…other than the previous President who is out of office and shows no real sign(s) of leadership, just showmanship and bluster. I guess to clarify the GOP mid-term election goal…take control of Congress, then do stuff.

Now, what actually happened? Well, the GOP not only didn’t gain control of the Senate, they are on track to actually lose the a seat, maybe two. And that my friend is significant because most “experts” were predicting that the GOP would get 53 – 54 seats under their belt. The House…well, not much better. The GOP was supposed to sweep the House for a large majority…ah, not so much the evening of 11/8. The GOP appears to have flipped 16 seats to their side, and lost 6 seats to the Democrats…a net gain of 2%…and still not even a sign of a majority yet. At a more local level the GOP actually lost a governorship to the Dems! And lost that office in an assumed Conservative state.

So by any measurable, logical, reasonable, bottom-line standard…the GOP lost the 2022 mid-terms…and lost badly. Granted, there is still a chance that the GOP might gain control of the House, I will give you that. But, the trends, as they stand now, indicate that the GOP may not gain control of the House either, although I believe they will. The GOP must win 7 of the last 19 House seats that are still undecided. Again, bottom line…the GOP lost and lost big…period. And, as I see it, rightfully so.

Well, I am not entirely accurate, there is one huge bright spot, a shinning light on a hill that really stands out as a major victory for the GOP…DeSantis. He beat the snot out of Crist in Florida…beat him by 20 points…even beating him in mostly Democrat counties…and moving the needle of Latino voters to the GOP side. A mega bright spot for the GOP!! That race went right…big time. Congrats DeSantis!!!!

Next question to ask is an easy one…what went right? For me that is a pretty easy one to answer…nothing other than DeSantis. Well, if the GOP does squeak by and win the House that would be a “right” but that is all. Objectively speaking…little, if anything, went right for the GOP in the mid-terms.

Now the big one…what went wrong?

We have to set the context of the mid-term elections to the forefront…everything imaginable was going against the Democrats. The economy, gas prices, the stock market, inflation, sky high mortgage rates, stratospheric housing prices, mammoth national debt, every single indicator of the economy was going massively against the Democrats. Then there is crime the likes we haven’t seen in…well, maybe never. Add to that the southern border invasion, drugs like fentanyl flooding across, cartel violence, human trafficking going through the roof, and the Administration official lying about it every step of the way. Then add into the mix the energy crisis that is threatening our country…that the Dems intentionally created. And then let’s mention the war in Europe and the threats by two mad men of nuclear war breaking out. Now Biden…oh, boy…bumbling Joe-the-Pervert Biden…historic low approval numbers and his inability to even know where he is, or where to go next, or even to put together a coherent sentence.

EVERYTHING GOING AGAINST THE DEMOCRATS…EVERYTHING!

And yet…the GOP fails on a scale that is almost unimaginable…unless you know the GOP.

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way right off that bat. A total of 25 Senate candidates and 162 House candidates had been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Among Trump’s Senate candidates 17 of the 25 are declared winners, 68%. On the House side, Trump-endorsed candidates performed well, 141 of the 162 endorsed candidates had been deemed election winners, 87%. Overall 84% of his endorsed picks won…not bad at all.

However, the question needs to be asked…how much difference did his endorsement help? Well, interestingly enough there was a nationwide survey sampling of all voters…28% of the respondents cast their ballot specifically to vote against Trump. So how much did Trump help or hurt? Hard to say with certainty…but the GOP didn’t even come close to expectations…you do the math. And by the way…the 4 key Senate races that the Republicans were supposed to win to throw the Senate to the Repubs were all Trumped-backed…and none of them won. Just some more math for you.

We do know that Mitch McConnell pulled tens of millions of dollars out of the Senate races in Arizona and New Hampshire…both seats that were initially projected to be won by the GOP. And both those seats were lost to the Dems by relatively small margins. The funding was pulled back from the candidates in both contests very late in the race resulting in plunging exposure in the critical last two weeks of the race. My opinion, McConnell is directly responsible for those two loses. More help was needed for those two candidates in terms of cash and fellow GOP campaigners in the last two weeks…not jerking the financial rug out from under them when it was needed most.

Here is a question that I wish you to answer…What was the GOP message for the mid-term elections?

Maybe better yet…What has the GOP party and their leadership stated that it stands for, what they are fighting for? Tell me please the top 5 priorities that the GOP party says it will work on that mean a damn thing to the American people. Notice I said the “GOP party” not candidates. And I specifically referred to GOP leadership. What have you heard Mitch McConnell say the GOP party was committed to? How about on the House side…what has McCarthy said the GOP stands for?

I don’t see a single national GOP party leader coming out passionately and declaring what the GOP party stands for, what they are/will fight for, what their principles are…nothing, not a sound. Yes, we hear from Trump on a regular basis. But he is a mixed metaphor at best, and primarily self-serving for the 2024 election. But let’s face reality…Trump is all about Trump. Even the singular brightest spot on November 8th being DeSantis, and Trump makes fun of him. And then Trump takes a terrible cheap shot at Governor Youngkin as well, Youngkin being another very bright spot on the GOP side…a winner.

I mean come on…Trump has to be in the spotlight all the time…and tear down that which is good…even when the GOP needs every bright spot it can get!? And then there are still people who wonder why Trump is thought of the way he is…and why isn’t in the White House.

So here is my opinion on why the GOP failed in the mid-term elections 2022…message. Well, that isn’t exactly correct either. I should have said…principles. And then add…no clear message to tell the American public what those principles are and how it can benefit America to be a greater place to live and raise a family by voting for GOP candidates.

Now, that being said, I will also add this for you to consider. Along with the principles/message problem of the GOP…American citizens are losing it. By in-large a huge number of folks have become degenerates, lazy, compliant, and incapable of independent thought.

By degenerate I speak to the immoral crap affecting our children; examples such as the public trans-drag queen events for children as young as three. Then there is the whole gender bender bullshit being taught in schools. And please don’t get me started on the medical profession physically and mentally mutilating our children under the guise of “transitioning” when it is actually worse than any evil ever in the history of the world.

As far as lazy and complaint…well, you see it every day…so many people don’t even want to work now, at all. Some want $15 per hour to flip burgers. Others want to be catered to and work from home for 8 hours of pay…doing a couple hours of actual work. Workforce participation rate is at an all time historic low. Need I go on?

And finally…independent thought…oh, crap! I honestly believe that 90% of the US is 100% incapable of independent thought. Yes, I mean that claim also includes both Dems and GOP party loyalists. The public school machine, and the culture in general, has systemically deadened enough brains in the US to make it the right thing to do to simply buy into whatever they hear from the most appealing source. The ability to perform critical thinking, to be objective, to think logically, to be willing to recognize and accept actual facts and evidence is a lost art in America. I didn’t say we aren’t smart in the USA…I said we are ignorant and willingly misled…blissfully so on both accounts.

And here is my closing…I am sure you are thankful for that! The elections are what they are…virtually meaningless in the context of the last 120 years of hisotry. We know what the Dems want and what they will work passionately for. But what if the GOP had swept the House and Senate? Yeah, let’s look at their history…it sucks. When was the last time the GOP even put forward a balanced budget? How about the last time the GOP shrank the size of government? Restored a right, freedom, or liberty? How about the last time the GOP returned any kind of power from the government back to the citizens? When was the last time the GOP did anything substantially good for the country?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

So the mid-term elections were not a loss for the GOP…it was another loss for the country. The Dems didn’t win a thing…the elites won yet again. And this had been going on for decades…and decades…and decades…don’t fool yourself.

But, we don’t give up…we do whatever we can, everywhere we can. We prepare for the day.

One final thought…an after-thought actually…but maybe the most important thought…

I wanted to understand more details about how Katie Hobbs, a vanilla, boring, do-nothing, non-campaigner, non-debater has won the Governorship of AZ…so I decided to look at the election results by county. Interesting results…counties with the largest cities went Democrat which gave the Dem nominee a numerical advantage over her Republican contender. But I also noticed that counties with high Indian reservation populations and reservation land concentration also went for the Democrat…or barely squeaked by for the Repub. And finally, while the southern border counties didn’t go all Dem, they were light in terms of their support for the Republican nominee. Interesting.

So then…why not look at the national map for the breakdown of Democrat vs Republican. I looked at several of the last elections and saw this…1) Dems are clustered primarily in large cities, plus a couple of rabidly radical liberal states such as California, New Mexico, Colorado, 2) Republicans basically politically occupy the remainder of the country. Interesting.

Well then, why not look at the breakdown of the most socialist/Communist state outside of China…California. Overwhelmingly the largest part of California by land mass is pretty solidly Republican. And once again, the radical Progressives (i.e. Democrats) are clustered in the large cities and the southern border counties. Interesting.

What does that mean in today’s life? Well, there has been considerable talk about civil war over the last 4 years or so, a bunch just lately. And how do those potentially warring demographics breakdown? Mostly Conservatives vs Progressives…or Republicans voters vs Democrat voters…in general political terms. And according to decades of election results where do most of the Republican voters live? In rural areas. And the Democrat voters? They live primarily in large cities and a few radical liberal states, plus southern border counties.

I have been pondering for years…if a civil war broke out how would the country divide. I have felt for a long time it would basically come down to liberals vs conservatives. Which means that cities would be large population bases of one side of the war…the dreaded liberals. But what would they be lacking? They would be lacking what the rural areas have…namely, the ability to produce 1) food, 2) water, 3) energy. World wars have been fought over the same things…resources primarily and then politics a distant second. Would America’s civil war play out the same way?

Well, no. I think it will start by some overt act of violence perpetrated by the US federal government. It will be intentional and directed at prompting a reaction by those who are seen by the federal government to be Conservatives (a.k.a. domestic terrorists). Then it escalates. Quickly it will then boil down to the previously mentioned demographics…rural/towns/small cites vs large population areas and a few radical liberal states.

I think at that point the rural areas will attempt to deprive their attackers of food, water, and energy. The liberals will then do anything required to acquire and control the resources of the rural areas. And that I believe this demographic breakdown is born out by election result maps of the last number of decades.

Good luck America…you’re going to need it.

TRAP: Solar Information Sources

So I have been doing extensive research on off-grid solar systems because I will be upgrading our system after Thanksgiving. I am adding more solar panels, a 2nd charge controller, and a 2nd inverter. Along with that a general upgrade replacing some fuses and switches with circuit breakers, plus up-sizing some wiring. And to make sure I was/am on track I am seeking out information from reliable, expert, professional sources such as the manufacturers themselves, installation engineers, etc. Oh boy, I was  surprised, disappointed, and a bit disgusted in what else I found.

Along the way I came across a whole bunch of folks, most of whom have YouTube channels, that are putting out some horrible, terrible, and potentially dangerous information. I mean some really, really bad content that on the surface sounds fine, but when compared to factual technical information is…well, pure junk. One of the problems I saw was mis/dis information about manufactures.

Let me start off by saying this…I’ve been building solar projects for over 10 years now. And, after my initial 24volt residential off-grid build here at the glamstead I realized I was working with 10-year old technology centered around lead-acid batteries. Seeing the problem rather quickly I started the first up-grade to 48v LifePo4 batteries, new inverter, etc. As I was doing the upgrade I asked the local solar dealer to ensure I had top-quality, Tier 1 equipment that I wouldn’t have to worry about. He provided Victron Energy equipment. I am so glad he did. But, back to the problem of mis/dis information about manufactures.

Part of my overall research was ensuring that Victron equipment was top-of-the-line stuff. During the research I found the real problems were far and few between. The performance problems came from under-powering the equipment itself…too small of a battery bank, too small of an inverter, too few solar panels, etc. So it was more of a system design problem than an equipment quality problem. There were two problems I found on the Internet that were serious…one inverter catching fire and one MPPT charge controller burning out. In both cases it was a wiring issue. The MPPT had a bad wire connection in the battery + wire connection inside the MPPT…installer fault. The inverter fire came from another bad wire connection inside the inverter with the battery + wire. Both times the wire wasn’t properly prepared or correctly connected to the equipment. Interesting to note…Victron did a warranty replacement on both. So the equipment was fine, the installers messed up.

Well, let’s wrap this up…a lot, most, much, of the solar information on the Internet, especially YouTube, is pure crap. It is misleading, poorly written, poorly produced, mostly DIYs, and overall just bad info. There are lots of sources out there with great information…but it can be had to sort that info from the junk info.

So Beware!

I am really concerned for folks who are doing a residential solar DIY project. This is especially true when someone is attempting a whole house, grid-tied, any system that is 48v, or any system with lithium batteries.

Why?

I don’t want to see anyone burn down their house, run afoul of their local utility company, get electrocuted with high-voltage / high-ampere system, or blow up or start a fire with a lithium battery.

So please go with only the best quality information sources, stay away from “garage experts”, and verify all information with manufactures before implementation. That is especially true with “hacks”, “shortcuts”, or “huge savings” promoting information….as well as any equipment engineered in China.

I buried a friend this weekend…

I left Friday morning for a 6-hour drive that I really didn’t want to make. One of my very best friends died quite unexpectedly, a massive heart attack. My dear friend left behind a wife, a teenage step-daughter, and three adult children that any parent would humbly and gladly claim. Bill was a dear friend of mine, a true brother. A brother not in the sense of blood, military service, or the like…but more along the lines of a deep spiritual brother that I cherish.

Bill and I could talk for hours about anything, jokes thrown in to make it fun, we both had a similar sense of humor with which we tortured the world. I was his confidant. He spoke to me of things that he either did not, or could not speak, to others. We cried together more than once for personal reasons…deep personal and spiritual reasons.

Bill loved God. And there is no doubt in my mind that God loves Bill as only a Heavenly Father can love His child…without reservation. I loved Bill as well…he was my brother, my friend, a kindred spirit. He has left a hole in my daily life…I am sad to no longer have his companionship and share our conversations.

Friday night was a family only viewing and gathering…I was invited multiple times by his wife and his brother…they knew of our deep friendship. Tears were shed Friday night for the loss of his presence.

As I drove back to my motel that night I was completely lost in my soul, my heart ached, the night was blacker than I had ever remembered. At the gathering his teenage grandchildren cried, the younger ones milled about and played intermittently but quietly. His widow hugged me with a sorrow that was deep and full of anguish. He was gone all too soon and far too young…he was only in his 50’s. His son and I shared a close half hour together…he spoke to me of how often his father had mentioned me and how fondly he had appreciated and loved me. I cried.

Then his son and I spoke of the military, we are both Navy veterans…he 30 years my junior. A bond shared by shipmates was formed, stories shared, and some of the loss retreated for a brief time.

On Saturday the brief viewing was filled with more grandchildren, and a wide range of additional friends, co-workers, and former patients. Bill had spent almost his entire post-military adult life as a nurse. But not just any nurse…first as an ER nurse, then as a cardiac specialty nurse. More than a few of his former patients were there at his funeral out of gratitude for all that Bill had done for them.

During the service, listening to his children speak of him brought more than one chuckle as they shared personal stories filled with humor. More tears than I care to tell you about as they spoke of how much they would miss him. His brother, another close friend of mine, could hardly get through his eulogy…he shed many tears in that 15 minutes.

But the most moving and touching memory of that service was the closing prayer…a prayer uttered by his 13-year old granddaughter. Celeste had a close and special bond with her grandfather, she was his favorite of all the 12 grandchildren I would assume. She struggled with her emotions, her love for him was so readily apparent, her tears flowed without shame or embarrassment. She whispered that prayer as only a child with unbound love could…quiet, respectful, honest, and feelings that come from deep within a person’s heart and soul. I was irreverent…I didn’t bow my head, I watched this young woman full of grace and determination pay her last respects to her grandfather. I cried from beginning to end of this sweet girl’s prayer.

Had you known Bill you would have loved him as well. Had he been your friend you too would have a huge hole left in your heart and soul as do I. Had you been one of his many patients you would know of his love, compassion, and unrestrained commitment to his profession. Bill was simply one of those rare and special people that don’t come along very often in life.

Bill is missed by many.

Today, in the full afternoon sunshine of a wonderful fall day, I am sure, with all my heart, that Bill is smiling at those of us left behind. I can almost hear his words…love, laugh, make others happy, make them smile, and get out there and take a walk with a loved one…and I miss all of you as much as all of you miss me. And he would smile that special knowing smile of his, a loving smile of his, while he shared these last six words…it is worth the journey of life.

In memory of my brother and friend…Bill.

Check List – Misc.

This is the ninth post in a series of posts that will cover each area of threats/risks as they pertain to emergencies, disasters, and grid-down events. Each check list has been taken from the associated “layering” article for each area of risks and threats. This series is based on the “7 Common Risks/Threats” article I produced a few years ago.

As I have reviewed the disasters in the last 40+ years I noticed pattern develop, a pattern of common risks, or threats, that were present each and every time. Granted, in some situation/incidents one or more items were far more prominent but they were all there.

This particular check list applies to general preparedness items that are not included in one of the previous 7 checklists covering the 7 Common Risk/Threat areas.
