Yaesu FT-8900R Mobile Ham Radio – Part #1

Yaesu FT-8900r Quad-Band Ham Radionote: first appeared in January 2015.

I really love this mobile unit!  The Yaesu FT-8900r is an amazing piece of Ham radio technology wrapped up in a very compact and sturdy package.  But before I gush all over this little beauty let me get into some of the nuts and bolts of what makes this mobile unit fit my need.

Right after getting my Ham Radio License I was looking to buy my first radio.  But before just running out and buying the first radio that I could find, I wanted to describe exactly what the mission was and any specific requirements I might have for a Ham radio.  If you do it and you do it right, that may take a little time because you have to think through scenarios, set priorities and use both common sense and analytical skills.  So here goes…

Mission –

Provide reliable clear communications over the widest range of radio frequencies for both normal daily operations and emergency/disaster/”grid-down” situation.

Requirements & Limitations –
  1. Must be sturdy, reliable and able to function in harsh environments; including in a off-road truck.
  2. Must be able to run on 12vDC power.
  3. Must have an internal speaker and have external speaker capability.
  4. Must be intuitive to operate from the front panel.
  5. Must be easily computer programmable.
  6. Must be able to scan all frequencies in all resident frequency bands.
  7. Should have a a large number of memory channels (at least 200).
  8. Should be able to dual scan all frequencies in all resident frequency bands.
  9. Should move easily from home to vehicle to field operations without undue effort.
The Good & Less GoodYaesu FT-8900r Quad-Band Ham Radio

I had previously purchased a Yaesu FT-60r handheld radio and was very impressed with its obvious quality and reliability.  It is a very sturdy unit that has a lot of built-in capabilities.  Read more about the Yaesu handheld FT-60r radio.  While I did search all available brands I was predisposed to being partial to Yaesu based on my experience with the FT-60.  I did the typical side-by-side comparison of unit capabilities and performance.  It soon became very obvious to me the 8900 was the right mobile radio for me.

Here are some of my findings:

  • The keys located on the microphone are fully programmable for all your common usage.  So you don’t have to use the buttons on the radio head while driving.  Simply hold the mic and hit the appropriate key.  Examples: scan stop/start, change bands, volume control, etc.
  • You can use this radio as a “cross-band” repeater.  And that my friends is an amazing option to increase the

    Remote head installation.

distance of your teams’ handheld radios.

  • Ability to monitor or scan two bands simultaneously.
  • With the remote head you can mount the main radio body in a safe secure location.  The mount the small lightweight head wherever it makes the most sense for you and your vehicle.
  • Runs cooler than other rigs I have seen or heard about.
  • 50 watts of power enables this to be used as a great base station as well as a mobile.

There are some minor, very minor, drawbacks:

  • The buttons are not back lit.  I actually like this for OpSec purposes in a way.
  • The knobs on the front panel are a little on the flimsy side.  But I am not abusive on my radios so I am not worried about that.
  • You really need a computer and software to program this radio.  There are many features and trying to program them, or the frequencies, is more than difficult for me without the software.

This radio is four band capable and that is exactly what I was looking for and exactly what I got.  This is a great radio!

SitRep – 7/23/2019

Here I go again…more spewing of opinion on what I see is happening. Lucky for you I am writing SitReps less than one a month.

Not a whole lot has changed since the last SitRep (6/16/2019), mostly the situation has just continued to decline and deepen.

I had a conversation yesterday with a friend I have had for over 40 years. She asked me how much more time we had left…specifically, would the country last another 5 – 10 years. Much to her disappointment I gave her my standard/stock (albeit, correct) answer.

We could last another 50 – 100 years, or we could collapse in the morning.

Yeah, I know…Why is she still my friend?

However, that is my standard answer and it hasn’t changed in the last 6 – 7 years…and probably won’t. Well, not until we get a “singularity” point, or some other event on a significant enough scale that will affect our standing as a country. And yes, we could wake up on any given morning have experienced one…and see that the country is crashing around us. For right now…we are just a slow train wreck…but a wreck all the same.

Okay, on with the SitRep…

Today I will cover three primary areas of concern:

  • Economy
  • Deepfake AI
  • Violence
Economy –

In my post FAQ – 7/5/2019 I talked about the shrinking middle class…it is disappearing, and has been since 1970…at an alarming rate. Well, on 7/16 CNBC released an article that talked about the middle-class and how they have a very sour outlook on the economy and their future. And that attitude has taken a noticeable downturn in the last six months. In one report the middle-class rated their ability to achieve the American Dream at only a “C”. And what would your parents have said to you if you came home with only C’s on your report card?

Another related report they covered stated that half of the middle-class feared a major recession coming within a year. That Stock Market Crash is a concern, threat, risk for preppers during grid-down.represents an increase of 10% in the last year alone. Their “feeling” was that we are due for a major recession…or worse. That’s HALF of them expect that!

And here was their response to prepare for that feared coming major recession:

  • Refinance their mortgage to free up money for them to spend.
  • Reduce their retirement contributions.

So there you have it…middle-class folks fear a major recession is coming and want to prepare for it. They intend to do that preparation by going deeper into debt and reducing their ability to retire. Just how smart is that?

Notice, there was no mention of reducing spending. To stabilize finances without reducing spending is impossible…simply impossible. Kinda sounds exactly like the federal government…spend more money, borrow more money, kick the “responsibility can” down the road. Wonderful!

This is one of those subjects that simply makes me furious…the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling is a monetary number that the government is not allowed to exceed in their borrowing. It is designed to keep the President and Congress in-check as far as fiscal irresponsibility is concerned. In other words…when the President/Congress seeks to borrow money they are constrained by law (i.e. the debt ceiling). Once that debt ceiling is reached Congress has to approve an increase in the debt ceiling before the government can borrow more money to spend. And this President and Congress are out of fiscal control…and they just crossed a red line.

The whole reason for having Congress approve an increase in the debt ceiling is accountability and compliance with the law. When they go through the process of raising the debt ceiling for a specific dollar amount the President has to formally request it and Congress has to formally vote on it for approval. That gives the public full knowledge of what is happening and puts the responsibility/accountability on the President and Congress. Not a perfect system to be sure, but at least one that keeps us, US citizens, informed and allows us to use that information at the ballot box.

But this President and this Congress decided that responsibility/accountability is not something they want to be saddled with. They worked together (called bi-partisanship) to not just raise the debt ceiling…but to put no limits on how high the debt can be raised during that time. Yup! You read that right. Suspending the debt ceiling means there is no limitation on the amount of money that can be borrowed by the federal government. Yes sir…whatever they borrow during the period of the suspension simply gets added to the national debt without having been voted on, approved, identified, and without anyone being held accountable…and the public being is kept in the dark about it. Nice job Mr President and members of Congress!!

Oh, but not to worry…this isn’t the first time the devious “debt ceiling suspension” trick has been used against the American public…no sir. Most recently the President and Congress did the same thing in February of 2018. Yup, they did a one-year suspension of the debt ceiling just last year. Maybe that is why this President and this Congress have borrowed more money per year than any other President & Congress in the history of the country!

This President is averaging nearly 35% more annual borrowing than the previous President. Ah yes…how sweet…the art of the deal. And that deal making is financially and economically tanking us faster than at any other time in the history of the country. Isn’t it great to see Dems and Repubs, Congress and President, working together so well?!?!?!?!?!

Technology: DeepFake & AI –

In my SitRep on 6/20/2019 I shared some disturbing information about the use of DeepFake technology utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI). I hope you read it. Well, several cyber-security companies have recently released information concerning the use of DeepFake technology in the corporate world. Yeah, sooner or later it was going to happen.

So here is what is happening…a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) gets a call from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) requesting an emergency money transfer. And yes…the “CEO” is a person impersonating the real CEO on the pone using DeepFake audio technology to sound exactly like the real CEO. With the help of AI, the DeepFake software has “learned” to sound just like the real CEO. And the amounts stolen through these money transfers are in the millions.

So you think the potential damage of what this technology could do would be limited…right? Wrong!

The potential damage that this technology can achieve in the corporate world is limitless. Imagine someone impersonating a CEO released an audio statement stating that their devices had been infiltrated by the Chinese and all the user’s personal and financial information was hijacked and it is now in the hands of the Chinese government. And, everyone was to immediately discontinue using their device and no “fixes” would be released, the company was declaring bankruptcy, and all the employees were not to come into work until further notice.

Pretty bad, eh?

Now, imagine that company CEO was head of Apple. What would the fallout be? What would happen to the price of Apple stock? What would happen to their company operations?

I watched a video of former President Obama calling President Trump a “dip st!t”…yes, you read that right…a video and in his own words Obama called him that name. How horrible!!! And worse…inciting.

Ah, only problem…it was a DeepFake video produced by Jordan Peel…and it was 100% DeepFake. Let me state clearly…I could not tell it was a fake. Be very, very cautious in the coming months about what you see and hear in the media.

About 10 days ago I read where they are now looking at making whole movies via DeepFake technology. Yup, entire movies with actors that we all know. Problem is…it won’t be the actors you are watching…it will be their DeepFake impersonations. Yeah, Imagine a young Sylvester Stallone playing the role of James Bond 007 with Michelle Obama as his Bond Girl. Yeah…yuck! But, it is coming!

Well, not entirely true…it is already here. There are already “remix” videos out there, but generally limited to only scenes, not entire movies. And the scenes look very good from what I’ve seen. Too good. So, it’s only limited to movies…no big deal…right?

Ah, what happens when those DeepFake videos become news releases from CEO’s…or worse…the President of the United States?

Can you imagine a video showing President Trump in the Situation Room secretly declaring war on Russia? And it shows him clearly telling his Generals, you can hear him plainly, that we will launch a full nuclear strike on Russia in an hour…and that video hits that Internet?

What other devious and dangerous ways could this DeepFake media technology endanger you, your family, our country?

Prepare yourselves for it…or not…and suffer the consequences if you don’t.

Violence –

Democrats and Republicans see violence coming! Yup, the Washington Examiner wrote an article recently based on a couple of reports that showed that 91% of all Democrats see violence coming, Republicans were at a 67%. That averages out to 80% of Americans expect to see violence soon.

And where exactly do they expect to see that violence coming from? That is a key to pay attention to.

The answer is…political supporters of each party. Yup, these folks expect to see violence at the hands of political party supporters. No, there was no distinction of which party…both party’s supporters are expected to commit the violence. The respondents are claiming “politically charged rhetoric” will be the motivation to commit the violence. Do you doubt that? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Just look at the recent Twitter wars and rally speeches and media releases.

So…enjoy the two-party system, enjoy the tough talk, enjoy the call to action, enjoy the political rhetoric. And then be prepared to deal with the after-affects.

I am telling you point blank…”VIOLENCE” is the #1 threat/risk we face in emergencies, disasters, and certainly in grid-down…and now it’s coming to our daily life. Be prepared…or suffer.

If you have been reading my website posts over the years you know I have an issue with cops misbehaving…SC cop plants taserCop brutally kicks handcuffed woman.especially when they shoot and kill unarmed citizens…or choke them to death for no reason…or punch and kick them when they are handcuffed and they are petite handcuffed women and the cop is a huge 220lb musclehead, etc.

You also know that I make a big differentiation between LEOs (law enforcement officers) and Peace Officers. The names should be sufficient to understand the difference.

And that being said…you should not commit violence against either while they are doing their legal and lawful responsibilities…period!

Yesterday I saw several reports of NYPD offices getting buckets of water thrown on them. Yes, the officers were on duty. Yes, they were making arrests. And yes, bystanders threw buckets of water on them. And in one case threw a bucket at an officer and hit him in the head with it. That is totally unacceptable!

Why?

Because today it is buckets of water being thrown on them to show disrespect…what about tomorrow, or the next day, or next week, or next month?

To their credit the officers ignored the attacks and didn’t take the action that there were entitled to by law. After all…it is assault and battery on a police officer…even if it is a bucket of water. The officers showed amazing and admirable restraint.

But, what about the next time? The next time is it a brick, a bucket of urine or feces, or a bucket of cement? What about if the next time the officer is a musclehead SS type…and shoots the water thrower?

This has potential disaster written all over if it becomes a fad or trend!

And here is an interesting side tidbit…did you notice that they were NYPD officers? And who is running New York City? Yeah, a radical communist/socialist mayor. Nuf said.

Summary –

With everything that is happening in the country/world right now, the single most important thing you can do is be informed so you can be better prepared.

  • If you want to learn to be better aware of hat is happening <click here>
  • If you want to be better prepared to mitigate the threat/risk of violence <click here>
  • If you want to better understand what is happening in our country right now…and where we are headed <click here>

I can’t force you to be prepared, I can’t even force you to see what is happening, or to connect the dots…even if I lay it out plainly for you. What you see, believe, and do is completely and totally up to you. And that is as it should be. I don’t want to change that.

What I would like you to do is consider that you are seeing in the country/world today…then think it through…ponder it. Then I would like you to assess what are the threats/risks to your family. And then finally…what commonsense, reasonable, well-grounded, and balanced steps can you take to mitigate those threats and risks.

If you want to learn more about identifying risks and threats…and how to mitigate them <click here>.

But, please, I am begging you…do not ignore the warning signs that are all around us. Tough times are here, really tough times are coming. The threats and risks are real. And just as real are the ways to prepare to avoid them and/or the best ways to deal with them. It is all about keeping your family as safe as possible during bad times.

Lessons Learned: Harvesting onion seeds

note: originally written/posted in 2015

harvesting seeds from Utah Spanish Sweet onionOne of my goals this year was to grow a year’s worth of onions and harvest the seeds from them for use next year. So far, so good. And yes, I planted a heirloom onion called Utah Spanish Sweet. I am really pleased with the onion, it seems to do very well here in the desert southwest where water is at a premium. But you wanted to hear about the lessons I learned while harvesting the seeds…

I have been holding on to several large seed heads from the onion tops. I didn’t do anything special, just put them on a table on the patio under the roof. But I did put off harvesting them as long as possible. Why? I’ve been working on my radio boxes, power boxes, and solar projects lately and wanted to stay focused on them. But this morning I had some time before getting ready for church so today was the day for harvesting seed.

First let me say, onion seeds are really small and my hands are really large. They are not easy for me to pick up. So the person in your family with small hands is probably the one most suited to this task. I am thinking “wife” from now on.

And I really wasn’t sure how many seeds to harvest so I figured I would gather approximately as many as I remembered were in the package from last year. Seemed reasonable at the time.

The seed heads were nice and dry, ready to go. I got a toothpick and started picking apart the seed pods allowing the little (tiny actually) seeds to fall onto the paper towel I had set on the dining room table. I was about 30 seed pods into it when I was bored out of my mind. Yeah, my ADD/ADHD kicked in and I was ready to move on to something else. But duty was calling…back to harvesting.

I knew there had to be a better way of getting the seeds out of the pods. I was right. I simply got a bunch of dried seed pods in my hands and started to gently rub them together in my hands. Sure enough, the seed pods broke open and out came the seeds. And with the seeds came the seed pod husks and the tiny little stems that had formerly been attached to the seed pods. So now I had seeds, seed pod husks, stems, and a bunch of finely ground powder that came from the husks, stems, and who knows what all. But I had a mess on my hands. But I knew a solution…pioneer skills!

threshing wheat

threshing wheat

Yup, I remembered reading about the days of wheat threshing, something the pioneers did back in the 1800’s and earlier. It is basically throwing the wheat up in the air and the heavier wheat berries fall back onto a canvas cloth and the wheat chaff gets blown away in the wind. In my cupped hands went a thimble sized amount of seeds and onion seed pod chaff…then I gently blew on it. It worked! But it was really slow.

Out to the shop I went, located a small glass jar, got my can of spray air and cupped my hand over the jar that now held a bunch of seeds and chaff. I stuck the air can nozzle in and gently started introducing air. It worked!! And it was pretty fast.

I cleaned up the last of it on a paper towel, let the seeds dry in the air for a day, then put them in a little plastic Utah Spanish Sweet onionziplock baggie. And now I have about 2 – 3 growing seasons worth of heirloom onion seeds ready for planting. All total I think I had about 1-1/2 hours in the entire process, including the learning curve.

So what lessons did I learn? The following:

  1. It takes a lot of seeds to supply enough onions for a whole family.
  2. It takes a lot of time to harvest onion seeds.
  3. I thought I had to figure out a “process” to speed things up. But the toothpick method would have been fine. It might have taken me 3 – 4 hours but it would have worked out with no problems. Maye even “cleaner” seeds when I was all done.
  4. Life after grid-down will flow at a slower pace…a lot slower. And you know, I think that is just fine.
  5. I might not get any opinions out of those seeds next year. Yup, I mean, how do I know that the seeds are actually any good? They should be, I know. But I’ve never done it before so I have no firsthand knowledge or experience doing it. So will it work out? I certainly hope so. But what if this was already grid-down? How do you like the idea of rolling the dice, your food dice?

So the number one thing I took away…I better make sure I can verify and validate all these little issues and challenges so I know for a surety that what I “hope” will work, “actually” will work. I don’t want to be basing the well-being of my family on “hope.” We know how that works, don’t we.

Information on the Utah Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion –

Utah Spanish Sweet onionA large, sweet yellow onion. Loved for it’s mild, sweet flavor, it is excellent raw. It does well in Western states and similar climates. This sweet onion is very popular for slicing and eating raw because of its mild sweet taste, and is delicious baked, sautéed, or fried.

Specifics:

•  It has fair storage characteristics.
•  Large bulbs sometimes weighing a pound or more.
•  Skin is a straw color and the flesh is white.
•  Plant very early in the spring in a sunny location as soon as the ground may be cultivated and enriched with organic material. Plant seeds 1/4 of an inch deep, 2 inches apart with 18 inches between plants. Press soil firmly over seeds.
•  Germination in 7 to 12 days at 50 to 60 F.
•  115(+/-) days to harvest.
•  Allow plant tops to fall and die before harvesting.
•  Deep globe up to 6″ in diameter and up to 2lbs. each.
•  Shiny straw brown skin with white medium firm flesh is a heavy producer.
•  Smaller bulb sets can be stored to replant next year.

Update Note:  In 2016 I used my saved seed to plant that year’s crop of onions. I had great onions!!! Harvesting the seed worked out just fine.

I wanna know…you can speak up…

If I am counting right, I have published 13 posts from my new book Escape from Home. I am publishing them as “pages” this time to make it more organized on the website. However, there are no opportunities to comment on each individual pages that I already published. A couple of folks have indicated they would like that opportunity…they wanna make comments and suggestions. A few folks have some questions about the story line, and prepper content.

Sorry. I simply didn’t enable that comment feature. I will enable it going forward.

In the mean time…here is an opportunity to take a quick survey on my new book and to make comments generally. You can even send me an email if you want to keep it just between us. So here you go…

First Aid Kits & Medical Kits…Types, Sizes, and Contents

The risk of injury or sickness is always present in any emergency, disaster, or grid-down situation. Think of any emergency…now, think of all the ways you can get injured or sick during that emergency. The outcome to your family can be devastating without the ability to properly care for minor and intermediate injuries and sickness. A simple infected cut on your finger could lead to sepsis and that can lead to death if not prevent and/or treated.

I have resurrected the articles where I listed the different kinds of medical/FirstAid kits, the mission for each, and their contents. It is well worth the time to read…and act on.

“Government is the problem!”

While I may not have agreed with everything he said, or everything he did…I have to admit, President Ronald Reagan did get this right in 1981.

note: This is a political post. It is about the problems we have in our political system and our country today…and have had for many decades. If you don’t want to read about politics, don’t read this article. If you don’t want to get upset, don’t read this article. If you don’t want to be challenged, don’t read this article, If you don’t want to face some ugly truths, don’t read this article. If you are not open minded, don’t read this article. If you are a political ideologue, don’t read this article. There, you’ve been warned. Read at your own risk.

While Reagan was referring specifically in this particular speech to the economic troubles of the time period, it is 100% true in the world today…maybe more so than ever before. And, while it applies to our current economic problems, it also applies equally to just about every problem our country faces, and has faced, in the last 130 years.

And he said this while HE was the president…and he didn’t exclude himself or any other time when a Republican was a President…and neither do I.

Thomas Jefferson once declared to “question everything.” Some have incorrectly tried to make this sound as if he were trying to disprove the existence of God. Not so! Jefferson was simply trying to motivate folks to figure out who they are and what they believe. He was imploring them to discover actual truth vs. following blindly.

I am asking you to do the same thing…open your mind, challenge yourself, and listen for truth in what you are about to read.

Now, let me start the post with my point…Patriotism vs. Nationalism.

You see, one is evil, one is good. And it is far more important is to know which is which…and why.

Let me fully disclose to you right from the start…as always, this is purely my opinion. And, I don’t want you to believe a single word I am writing. I do want you to listen to what I have to say, then think it over, do your own research, and most of all…come to your own conclusions.

Why?  Ah yes…”Why?

Because my friends, it will not be much longer until you will have to sort out exactly who you are, what you believe, what you are willing to stand up for, and more. Before long the outcome to those decisions will drive everything else in your life…and in the life of your family.

Now please, don’t become alarmed, nor think I am predicting some fast approaching dire apocalyptic event. Although, on any given day I would not be surprised to see such a thing.

Realistically, you will be faced more and more in the coming days, weeks, months, and years with these decisions in your life…or, at least their consequences. And without knowing certain fundamentals, you may well make the wrong decisions. And those wrong decisions could have very dismal consequences.

So, you might ask, “What are the right decisions?” Great question!!!  And I surely wish I knew the answers for you. I only know them for myself. It will be your job to figure out the right answers for you and your family.

Let’s start with nationalism. There are different definitions of nationalism, none of which are officially canonized anywhere in some all-powerful book of knowledge. Generally speaking though nationalism can be pretty well substantiated that it includes love of, and loyalty to country…more accurately, absolute love of country. That means whatever my country does or is I love it no matter what. And “country” in this respect is represented by government as well as its people. More plainly…I blindly love my country and support the government.

But, before we go any further with that explanation, let’s touch on patriotism. Interesting, when you track the origins of the word back into Greek and Roman era it sheds some fascinating insight. It becomes clear that the origins are love of the political conception of a country, associated with the love of the law and the common good. And it also includes a dedication to resist corruption and tyranny that threatens the law and the citizens it is meant to protect. That infers both a belief and required action.

So here I find a stimulating dichotomy in terms of the United States of America. Nationalism is the love of country, the government, and loyalty to it…a virtual unwillingness to question it or challenge it. Patriotism however means love of the founding principles of the USA (i.e. the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights), and being dedicated to protecting those founding principles against corruption and tyranny…regardless of the origins of that corruption and tyranny.

If you are a veteran or active duty you will recognize that concept in the swearing in oath we took when we entered the military…”…defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I bear true faith and allegiance to the same…”

Humor me. You may not believe my way of defining the two terms, nationalism and patriotism, but I think you will find that honest and objective research will prove me right. But, let’s say I am right just for this article. I want you to ask yourself a question, “Are you a nationalist or a patriot?”

Now wait! Before you answer that question, ask yourself this question, “Where our Founding Fathers nationalists or patriots?”

If they were nationalists by definition they would have supported England, King George, Parliament, the British army, and colonial rule. However, if they were patriots they would support individual rights first written about in such British founding documents such as the Magna Carta which outlined those individual rights, liberties, and freedoms.

So again…“Where our Founding Fathers nationalists or patriots?”

Now here is a hard question for you, “On the 4th of July did you celebrate our Declaration of Independence, which is based on the Magna Carta, as a document/declaration of open rebellion against tyranny and corruption?” or, “On the 4th of July did you celebrate the military, the government, the flag, fighting our wars, etc.?”

OK, so many of you are probably pretty mad at me about now.  Let me make it worse…

Let me test you…and your patience, “In 1770’s, if you would hear ‘British Colonies…Love it or leave it!’ who would have spoken those words? Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, or ????”

Yeah, the only folks that would have been speaking those words would have been British nationalists…commonly referred to as Tories. The likes of Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, etc. were working to try and fix the problems of their day based on patriotism (i.e. the love of the rights outlined in the Magna Carta and the rights then defined as natural rights (i.e. God-given).

So now…I want you to ask yourself a question, “Are you a nationalist or a patriot?”

I certainly hope you answered…”I am a patriot!”

And more importantly I hope you answered that way because you truly believe in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. That you believe in the beginnings of God-given rights that first appeared in the Magna Carta. That you have the courage to resist corruption and tyranny! I pray to God that this is part of your very soul!

It is easy in this day and age to get lost in the politics of it all. The word “compromise” has become synonymous with something good. But I tell you it is not! Compromise is what got us to this awful state that we find our country in today. Compromise between two parties… Republicans and Democrats. I make no distinction between the two in regards to their recklessness with the Constitution.

What?

Our Founding Fathers warned us against a two-party system…they tried to help us avoid the tyranny that we find ourselves in now. But, we allowed ourselves to be seduced into the grasps of powerful men whose only desire was power and wealth.

So we see clearly that our Founding Fathers vehemently despised a two-party system. Why? Because they knew eventually men would lust for power and dominion over each other…and political parties would enable that lust. Our Founding Fathers wanted us to believe in, debate, and come to a consensus in regards to principles NOT party dogma. And consensus is far, far, better than compromise!

So now try these two questions on…

What have the Democrats given us?

What have the Republicans given us?

There is no difference! To prove my point let me ask the question differently…What evil, tyranny, or injustice have the Republicans protected us from?

We still have crushing national debt and huge annual budget deficits. We still have abortion. We still suffer under staggering income tax burdens. We still have significant infringement of the Second Amendment. We still have popular election of Senators. We still have a monstrosity of federal government bureaucracy. We still have 10’s of thousands of federal laws on the books. We still have disregard of “due process” by the government. We still have a massive standing military that is strewn about the world, and virtual constant warfare for the last 100+ years. Need I go on?

But the Republicans are trying!!

Really?

When the Republicans controlled all three branches of government what anti-Constitutional laws did they repeal? When the Republicans controlled the House of Representatives and/or the Presidency tell me when they last had a balanced budget? When was the last time a Republican President shrank the actual power and reach of the federal government in any meaningful way?

But the Republican party is the party of Conservatism!

Ah yeah…that is what worries me.

Conservatism – (paraphrasing)

Encyclopedia Britannica – Conservatism is political doctrine that emphasizes the value of traditional institutions and practices. Conservatism is a preference for the historically inherited rather than the abstract and ideal.

Merriam-Webster: Conservatism disposition in politics to preserve what is established, a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change.

So how are you feeling about conservatism right about now?

Let me ask you another tough question, “Would our Founding Fathers have been considered ‘conservatives’?”

Time for another challenge…

Who is proud of our US military?

Well, I am for one. Actually, let me be more specific…I am very proud of the members of our military and their willingness to sacrifice for us. I have some knowledge of this since I am a vet…and my family is full of vets back to the Revolution. In WWI my father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and 3 great-uncles all served at the same time…and many more of relatives as well. But, that is not my point…just a little information ahead of time to prevent a possible lynching.

So, what did the Founding Fathers think of the military?

During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, George Mason put a finer point on it:

“No man has a greater regard for the military gentlemen than I have. I admire their intrepidity, perseverance, and valor. But when once a standing army is established in any country, the people lose their liberty. When, against a regular and disciplined army, yeomanry are the only defence [sic], — yeomanry, unskilful and unarmed, — what chance is there for preserving freedom? Give me leave to recur to the page of history, to warn you of your present danger. Recollect the history of most nations of the world. What havoc, desolation, and destruction, have been perpetrated by standing armies!”

In the Federalist Papers Alexander Hamilton wrote, “If circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens. This appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army, and the best possible security against it, if it should exist.”

So why do I quote the Founding Father in regards to our military? Because they warned us of such things! They warned us of these threats to our Constitutional Republic.

No, I am not denigrating the members of our armed services and to think such is sheer stupidity. Yes, there will be some that jump to such an obscene and idiotic conclusion but they are to be dismissed as nothing more than a mentally ill provocateur.

My point being…conservatives (i.e. Republicans) adore a large standing army, navy and air force!

Now you have to wonder…if the Founding Fathers warned us against a large standing army and warned us against a two-party system…and they were patriots…what does that make Republicans and Conservatives?

OK, take a breath…seriously, breath for a minute.

Fortunately most people who claim to be conservatives are actually libertarians…or at least so to some degree. Let me share these two graphics with you…

As you read through the two charts, what do you find yourself identifying with?

Now try this one on…

Yes, libertarians of today are the “classical liberals” of yesterday.

Now, let me go back and ask you this, “Were our Founding Fathers Conservatives, Liberals, or Libertarian in their beliefs?”

And then again, “Were our Founding Fathers patriots or nationalists?”

And lastly, “Did our Founding Fathers want us to have Democrat and Republican parties?”

Many of us view our Founding Fathers as divinely inspired…I am one of them. If I were to guess, those of you reading this article would agree with me on that point.

So, for me…

  • I am a patriot, not a nationalist.
  • I am civil society libertarian in my political thinking, not a liberal or conservative.
  • I am surely not a Republican, I am definitely not a Democrat.

Yup, that leaves me squarely and solely a person who views issues, ideas, thoughts, and problems from a purely principle position…not from a given political ideological perspective.

Now the real question is…Who are you?

Summary –

About now you are probably “Why did I write this article and what do I want from you?”

Well, just as Thomas Jefferson implored us to do, I wrote it to encourage you to challenge what your beliefs are. I want you to truly think about your principles and what they are based on…their foundation. I want you to become firm in those beliefs to prevent you from being blown about in the coming storm.

I want you to know that which is right to “stand for” and avoid the “fall for anything” traps that are here…and many, many more traps to come. There are people who have wrapped themselves in the flag and those who are carrying the Bible…and they are laying traps for you. How? They are using nationalism disguised at patriotism. And worse, they are using convoluted scripture from the Bible as justifications for their agenda. To do what? To get you to do those things that you would normally not ever do…that the real America would not do. They are learned men deceiving people by mingling some truths with their illicit and immoral plans. They are scheming for their own personal gain…power and money…and that of their political party.

I simply want you to know and understand truth as you have researched it. I want you to take action as you feel prompted to follow. To take those actions that you feel are right and based on a firm foundation of solid and actual truths. I don’t want you manipulated, tricked, and brought down.

America has an amazing, divine foundation. America’s Founding Fathers were divinely inspired men. America is an amazing country, the most fantastic country on earth, nothing like her exists.

America has problems in our past, but it does not define our future.

We are America’s future.

Stand Firm…Stand Tall !!

Your family needs you, America needs you, and God needs you.

Lessons Learned: My Walk Along the River this Morning

note: originally written/posted in 2015

Physical TrainingAs you know by now I try to do physical training 5+ times per week. I am also blessed with a job that pays me to do that each day. But I am cursed being in an area that at this time of year it is 100+ degrees and humid most days. But today was nice, hot but a stiff breeze blowing. Along the river it is usually a couple degrees cooler when the water is flowing. So I headed to the river for my PT today.

It was absolutely gorgeous along the river there this morning. I was even wearing my new tennis shoes. Hey, if you haven’t read my “Lessons Learned” about my tennis shoes you might want to read about that under Lessons Learned. I did my stretches and headed north along the river enjoying the stiff breeze blowing the bugs and mosquitoes into oblivion.

I have to admit I was a bit in la-la land as I was walking along. But then I got pulled back into reality. Let me share a series of photos with you and then I will talk some more…

Lessons Learned - River WalkLessons Learned - River WalkLessons Learned - River WalkOK, what did you see?

I am sure you saw everything I did, but what did it mean to you?

Since you are probably not familiar with this river, especially this part of the river, I doubt you picked up on what all of this meant. But to me it meant I need to keep my Situational Awareness (SA) up all of the time. Let me go into the details and tell you what I saw…

Lessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsLessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsLessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsThe river corridor here is owned by a government agency. Yeah, go figure. And they maintain this trail for walkers,  bikers, and horseback riders to enjoy the riverside. It has probably been about a year since I walked this river trail. But, I’ve been walking it for probably 7 or 8 years now. And I enjoy it. But this is the first time I ever saw anything like:

  • The empty cases of beer.
  • The large soda cups.
  • Tire tracks and ruts.

But then as I got a little further along the path I saw this…

Lessons Learned - River WalkLessons Learned - River WalkLessons Learned - River WalkAnd what it really was…

Lessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsLessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsLessons Learned - River Walk - danger signs - red flagsUp until this point this area never had anything like this…nothing…ever. And so I decided to turn it into an SA exercise.

The trail is 1-1/2 miles out to the point where I turn around and head back. The three miles with a few sets of pushups along the way takes me about 45 minutes. I got to the end, the half-way point, turned around and headed back. I started to take pictures to make this an SA experience for me and to share it with you.

Why?

Because I want to keep SA in the forefront of our preparedness skills. Similar to what I did with the “tennis shoe” Lessons Learned a while back. So hang in there and see if you can take away something useful from this article.

So here is the scenario that I set up…

It is the third day of grid-down. I got caught at work and was unable to leave due to agency responsibilities. I finally get a chance to leave. I am walking home where my family is waiting for me. I know this trail, it is where I regularly PT. It is a combination of the safest, most direct route home. It is also the only route where I will have water available to me; I have my MSR Sweetwater Filter System to use. I head home about 9:00 in the morning. Here is what I see as I walk along…

River walk lessons learned - situational awareness SAFirst thing, I walk in the middle of the trail to keep the safest distance from each edge of the trail. When a bush is close to the edge of the trail I move to the more clear side of the trail. That allows me a small increase in reaction time due to distance. It also gives me a slightly better view of what, or who, might be trying to ambush me. Then I see…

Lessons Learned - River Walk

This trail is “non-motorized” meaning that only walkers, bikers, and horseback riders are allowed. The presence of these tracks is out of the ordinary. The deep ruts is also a red flag. Either a truck accidentally went there, or someone intentionally tried to drive off the road into soft sand. Either way, it is a red flag. Then I see this…

Lessons Learned - River Walk

This area has never been trashy, there never has been large soda cups along this trail. They are fresh. They are next to a bush, but not “wind blown.” Why are they there? Where are the two people who put them there? A little further along I see this…

Lessons Learned - River Walk

Major red flag!! There is a strictly enforced no-drinking policy in this area, along this trail. Never have I seen an empty beer bottle let alone multiple empty beer cases and the bottles. But not all the bottles are strewn around. The cases are not faded, not rained on, not torn up. All of that points to them being fresh, recently put there. I keep walking, now as I come around the bend I see this…

Lessons Learned - River WalkNow, what does this tell you? To me this is a huge red flag, a true danger signal that absolutely cannot be ignored or dismissed lightly. So what is the deal?

The shopping cart is the first thing I notice. That indicates that someone, or a group, pushed the cart here with a “load” of something. Maybe food, water, and such. Or maybe cases of beer. But it was enough of a load that they didn’t want to carry it and had enough guts to steal a shopping cart to get their goodies here. But I have to keep moving, but I slow way down now, full of caution. Then the rest of it comes into view…

Lessons Learned - River Walk

What do you see given the scenario I painted at the beginning of this exercise?

More directly, and more importantly, what don’t you see that could well be fatal?

Let me digress for just a minute. At no time ever has camping been allowed in this area. The cops would never, and have never, tolerated people camping int his recreational use area. It is strictly for “day use” only. Although we have a large homeless population in the area, the cops simply won’t have this within a recreational area.

So, obviously you see the camp. How many folks is this camp set up for at first glance? But have you identified the real issue yet? That issue that could be the fatal issue.

Let me give you a clue by asking a question…”Where are the campers, the people?”

Yeah, you don’t see them right? Why don’t you see them?

Let’s explore the options:

  • They left and moved on to another camping location.
  • They went to town for food.
  • They went for a swim in the river.
  • They went scrounging for edible plants along the river bank.
  • Ambush01They have been arrested and taken away.
  • They have been killed and their bodies are in the bushes.
  • They are alive and in the bushes waiting for their next victim, their next prey, to come along.

I am sure there are more options you could come up with but I think the options I laid out got you thinking. Which are the most dangerous to me right at the moment I spot their camp?

I will propose that all of them are dangerous to me, but the last two particularly so. Why?

The first five all do with them simply being away from their camp for some period of time. But what if they are returning to their camp at the same time I come walking by? Do they see me as simply walking by or do they see me as approaching their camp to steal their gear?

How will they will view my uninvited presence? But they are likely to see my presence with some degree of defensiveness in my opinion. So, what would be their normal reaction in that case?

And do you honestly think they would all leave their camp and not leave someone behind for security purposes?

Now, let’s look at the last two options I listed. If there a difference in the degree of danger to me?

I don’t think there is a difference, either is a significant danger to me. If they have been killed by a person or persons then what is to say that I am not the next to meet the same fate?

I didn’t smell any dead bodies so I honestly think this was not the case. So that pretty much would leave the last option as a very probable option. And in my opinion, the most potentially deadly.

What would you do at this point? But before you do, remember the scenario I painted for you, think in terms of reality for the situation.

I would slowly drop into a slight crouch to lower my profile, do a quick 360 to clear my immediate area, and then slowly move to the closest cover in the opposite direction (or at least 90degrees) of the camp. Then I would RiverWalk-11develop the best 360 view I could and then settle in with patience.

I want to observe the camp area and the approaches for 30 – 60 minutes minimum. If I honestly think there could be an ambush waiting for me then I would observe and then withdraw. I would have no desire whatsoever to try a counter-ambush or any other kind of engagement. My mission is to get home…period.

If I don’t see anyone for 30 – 60 minutes then I slowly and carefully continue on my way but not using the trail for my travels.

If I did see someone I would slowly withdraw and carefully continue on my way but not using the trail for my travels.

Notice my actions are the same whether I observe someone or not. At this point I have no desire to interact with anyone. The more interactions with people that take place in a scenario like this, the more likely you are to encounter trouble, problems, or worse.

Leave people alone…get home.

I mentioned not using the trail for movement in describing what my actions would be. Why?

Well, if you were desperate, of low moral character, and had no issues taking people’s gear, equipment, food and water, where would you do that?

Where people are, right? And where would people be besides their homes, where they would be vulnerable? Yup, walking along a remote trail. So where would I walk?

I would walk 100’ or so off the trail, among decent brush parallel to the trail. That distance would be enough to put you to the rear of ambushers if there were any. Most people wouldn’t expect to see you walking that far off the trail when walking on the trail is the easiest. You do the unexpected.

So what to do if you aren’t that paranoid cautious yet? Try these ideas:

  • Walk in the middle of the trail creating distance between you and the sides of the trail giving you slightly more reaction time.
  • If there is brush close to the edge of the trail on one side, as you approach move to the opposite side of the trail keeping your eyes open for threats on both side.
  • If the bush crowds in on both sides of the trail, stop. Act distracted such as tying your shoe, adjusting your hat, looking at your watch. While you are engaged in the act of deception observe the entire area for threats. Any sign of threat take slow, careful and well thought out evasive actions.
  • Alternative to the above, stop and take a break next to some concealment like a bush or tree. Now, observe the area for 15 – 60 minutes for any threat indicators. Take appropriate action based on observations.
  • Additional alternative, without breaking stride make an immediate hard turn off the trail. Take evasive action based on your perception of the threat. But don’t continue near the trail. If you are going to continue moving forward, do so outside of the 100’ margin of the trail.

A couple things to be very cautious of:

  1. Don’t engage someone trying to talk with you. In the scenario outlined above they will try to bluff you into something, gaining time to relocate their ambush against you or social engineer you into something. Either way you go with this, they are a threat. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have been hiding from you.
  2. If they claim to be police and shout for you to stop you have a tough choice to make. First question, how do you know they are really police? Second, even if they are police, can you afford to be stopped and probably detained by police? Remember, you are armed. They police probably won’t like that too much and they will see you as the threat, especially since you just thwarted their ambush. Me? I would escape and evade at all costs.
  3. Any encounter or engagement of any kind with anyone is a threat to your freedom of movement and possibly your life. Simply move on…your goal is to get home to your family.

I hope that you have gotten something out of this Lessons Learned article. I am not trying to turn anyone into a special operations ninja or anything like that. I am not qualified to train folks in those skills. But what I am trying to do is share thoughts and scenarios with you that might help you think through a situation ahead of time. That is called planning and training.

Enjoy your day!! And go take a walk down by the river.

Home/Family First Aid Kit – Part #2

Medical Aid kit - part 2In Part #1 I explained the need for a Family First Aid Kit or Family Medical kit and I included a list of contents based on expected needs. This is not really a tactical or field first aid kit, more along the lines of around the home first aid kit.

< click here to read Part #1 >

Whatever it is called, this is Part #2 where I explain where I put the kit contents in the carry bag and provide a couple of tips. First, let’s go over the “mission” of this first aid kit –

“Kit shall contain ample first aid supplies to provide sufficient medical care to a wide range of home-based minor and life-threatening medical emergencies.”

Requirements and Restrictions –

  1. Assumption that professional medical transport and care facilities are within a reasonable timeframe that life-sustaining measures by family members are not required beyond 15 minutes.
  2. Must be reasonably weather proof.
  3. Must be reasonable capable of handling a drop of 3’.
  4. Supplies must be easily accessible.
  5. Supplies must be able to be grouped into logical treatment clusters.
  6. Supplies can normally be restocked within 12 hour time-frame.

It would pay you to read Part #1 before continuing. < click here to read part #1 >

Let’s move on to identifying each compartment of the carry bag…

Family Home first aid kit carry bagWhat is the general purpose of each compartment/component?

Bag Strap –

These are immediate action items to save a life. You don’t have to dig around in the bag to access these items. This is were I put the CAT.

Compartment #1 –

This compartment contains large dressings. To immediately stop bleeding if it is a matter of life of death. Otherwise, to provide dressing once a wound is cleaned and ready to be bandaged until transport to a hospital can be acquired.

Compartment #2 –

This compartment generally contains those items needed to sanitize and protect your hands from patients body fluids while cleaning their wound(s) to assess their condition.

Compartment #3 –

This compartment contains items to continue cleaning a wound and bandage it if no other treatment is required.

Compartment #4 –

This compartment contains items needed to clean a wound and apply antiseptic to keep wound(s) clean.

Compartment #5 –

General purpose compartment, mostly containing the medicine box.

Compartment #6 –

This compartment contains items to finish-up the bandaging process and secure a wounded or injured extremity.

Compartment #7 –

This compartment contains items to apply Bandiads to very minor wounds or finish-up the treatment of more serious wounds.

Home/Family First Aid Kit – Part #1

Medical Aid - family first aid kitI’ve really not wanted to write this article…I mean really not. From the previous articles on first aid kits you can tell I am way more a tactical first aid kind of guy. I subscribe to that model and believe in it. However, the time has come that I go a little more conventional when talking about first aid kits. And there is good reason for it…”emergencies.”

Emergencies are the incidents that are categorized on the first level of emergency preparedness. Previously I outlined the BOK (Blow Out Kit) and the IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) for individuals all the way up to the larger (FTCK) Field Trauma Care Kit. However, not all injuries occur in the field or during an incident so another type of first aid kit is needed…more along the lines of a home or family first aid kit. In the past I pretty much left it up to individuals to decide what to put in their home kits. Well, I that just seriously changed.

Why? As I was preparing to do a presentation the other day to a group of about 50 women I was utterly astounded by what I was seeing. I mean the various lists of kit contents was unreal. Some were regurgitation of other online lists, some were just lists of whatever was in the Walmart aisle. There were a couple that looked like someone’s random ADD thoughts. So I made the decision to work on what I thought would be the best all-round Family Home Fist Aid Kit (FHFAK).

Mission –

“Kit shall contain ample first aid supplies to provide sufficient medical care to a wide range of home-based minor and life-threatening medical emergencies.”

Requirements and Restrictions –

  1. Assumption that professional medical transport and care facilities are within a reasonable time-frame that life-sustaining measures by family members are not required beyond 15 minutes.
  2. Must be reasonably weather resistant.
  3. Must be reasonably capable of handling a drop of 3’.
  4. Supplies must be easily accessible.
  5. Supplies must be able to be grouped into logical treatment clusters.
  6. Supplies can normally be restocked within 12 hour time-frame.

The first thing that came to my mind when viewing this FHFAK was that is was not intended to be a medical supply warehouse. This kit is not meant to provide for mass casualties, not a warehouse, not meant to last for a year without being restocked, and not meant to cover every possible scenario. This was an immediate action first aid kit to be used by a family around the house.

With that being said, I still wanted this kit to work within the realm of emergency preparedness and into my layers methodology for injury and sickness. <click here to read more about that> I feel I’ve accomplished both, here’s why…

  1. The kit falls within the “emergency” category of emergencies, disasters and grid-down incidents which this website is based on.
  2. It expands past the “individual” layer of “Threat of injury or sickness” but nestles in nicely with the family layer and used on an everyday basis.
  3. The kit can also be used in any emergency, disaster and grid-down incidents as an immediate action bag or at a much lower level such as pulling a splinter from a finger.

In emergency services we referred to our “kits” as jump bags; we would grab the bag as we jumped off the fire firefighters Medical Aid jump bagengine into action. This kit is a family/home jump bag that can be grabbed whenever there is an injury within the family around the house. Same could be said if the family was camping, traveling, etc.

Man, I hope that clarifies what I envision this bag being used for. It took me a whole lot of writing to make my case and provide my vision for this bag.

Contents

First thing I had to do before simply starting to list the kit contents was to envision what kind of medical emergencies would show up at home among family members. To get that list going I used my experience from being on the fire department and a father of a family with three kids. Once I got that list of medial “emergencies” figured out, the contents list just really flowed. But, it was a jumbled mess of a list at first.

Taking the confusion and clutter out of the matter wasn’t too difficult, I just organized it in logical groups. And those groups are based on injuries I treated on the street. No, I won’t be offended if you group your supplies differently.

Once I had the contents and the groups figured out, I had to decide how to carry all of this stuff around and make it all readily accessible under stress. Now, before you chuckle that let me explain. In my early days on the fire department we carried our medical supplies in basically large plastic fishing tackle boxes. And those supplies looked all pretty and organized. However, kneeling in the street next to a vehicle accident patient as they were bleeding was a whole different story. And to make that story a lot shorter…many times we would dump the contents on the pavement so the supplies were easier to see and grab.

So my experience tells me…make this stuff easy to see and easy to grab when working under stress.

Once again I went back to what I know worked…and worked successfully for years under real-life conditions. I decided Medical responder first Aid bagon an actual medical kit jump bag. I found a used one which made it that much more Medical responder first Aid bagaffordable. The bags go by a number of different names; EMS bag, rescue bag, first responder bag, etc. I have included pictures of a number of them. There are two basic style for the most part, with and without external pockets. I like the external pocket for organizational purposes. When I start showing where I place the kit contents it will make more sense. But essentially I keep the most needed supplies in external pockets where they are easiest and quickest to get to.Medical responder first Aid bag

Example: The vinyl gloves are in an outside pocket since I probably need to get those first before providing care to the patient. Also, I want the CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) readily accesible on the outside where I can grab it easily since I may need to stop the bleeding really quickly. The triple-antibiotic ointment is on the inside in an internal pocket because it would be needed towards the end of treatment.

A principle that I subscribe to is “severity & probability”, that is part of Risk Management. The same principle applies to the medical needs you might run into around the home. There is literally a never-ending list that we could draw-up, but practicality needs to play a role as well. Yes, we could well find ourselves in a “non-breather” situation. That would be an example of a low probability & high severity situation. While you might want to consider airways, an AED, and all other manner of medical equipment…it simply isn’t needed. Why? Remember, we are only trying to sustain life until the next level of medical care can arrive on-scene. And we placed a “within 15 minute” limitation on that. So knowing CPR would cover the need vs. expensive equipment that may never be used.

While all that extra equipment might be nice to have, it isn’t really necessary for the kit I am talking about. Example: airways…you must maintain that specialty skill (airway insertion) to be able to properly use airways such as the OPA or NPA airway devices. And realistically, if you need to use an airway, by the time you figured that out and began that procedure, the EMTs or Paramedics are probably rolling up to the front door.

Now, if you live out in the country, the mountains, or on a rural farm, you may want to consider additional equipment that require more advanced skills. That is perfectly acceptable but use commonsense and logic when assessing those issues.

Here are my groupings of medical needs/supplies–

  • Cuts & Bleeding

  • Equipment
